Put simply. Consumers don't have any rights whatsoever over their own hardware. You don't play ball, you're on your own. Just like if you want to have Linux and play the latest games/blu-rays on your PS3 you're up shit creek. Can't do it. To my knowledge Sony is the only company that forces these kinds of restraints on how you use your hardware. The solution, don't buy Sony's bullshit, or pray that there are hackers out there with workarounds. However, thanks to the DMCA, you're still breaking the law by implementing them.
The worst thing about this kind of dick-move on Sony's part is, nobody actually fucking cares that they're essentially being bent over and fucked by Sony. I am astounded at the amount of sympathy people show to Sony's actions. If Sony had their way, you couldn't fucking sneeze in front your PS3 without requiring some sort of fucking update. Hell, they tried to make the PS3 have software that had a unique ID, and a central verification system that allowed 1 copy of a game to work with 1 console ONLY. Effectively killing the second hand trade. Thankfully, it was deemed a step too far, and they weren't allowed to do it. Judging on the amount of Sony sympathisers out there, this might happen with their next console.
They tried pulling this shit with the Go and it completely failed. Thankfully. There may be hope yet.

More like if Black and Decker made a vacuum that used an 'official B&D' brand rocket fuel and you figured out a work-around way so that you could use almost any other rocket fuel, regardless of brand or cost, and in response, B&D figured a work-around to block you from ever using 'official B&D' rocket fuel to run your vacuum, even if you already bought some.noiseredux wrote:I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I got a hacked PSP as a gift from a friend years back, never played it much, and now have a similar issue as the OP with my store bought copy of MGS PeaceWalker.
It's a tough situation. If you want access to the full capabilities of the PSP, you won't be enjoying Sony's games. On the flip side, if you play by Sony's rules (and their games), the PSP is locked up pretty tight and becomes a bit more lackluster.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Under EU law any piece of electronics must come with a free 2 year warranty from the date of sale.t0yrobo wrote:
Check the terms of service, or whatever equivalent document they have for the psp. I guarantee you it says that if you modify the system software you're shit out of luck. Pretty much all electronics are like this. It sucks, and I understand the philosophical problems people have with it, but that's just how it is.
But Sony can't go around fixing broken PSPs, if it's the custom firmware that broke them. They would be wasting money on something that is not their fault.
Same with any piece of electronics. Just because I wanted to overclock my graphics card, and burned it, it doesn't mean that the company making it should replace it for me.
Now if my unhacked PSP breaks without me doing something to cause it (aka dropping it), I expect Sony to replace it, and all of my PSN content (not a problem with Sony products, huge problem with Nintendo products.).
And for those who want hacked PSPs just for emulation, aren't there a lot of open platform handhelds out there, that support emulators?

I'm not well versed on XBox360 but I don't see how Nintendo/Microsoft is different from Sony. Isn't it correct that you have the same update issue with the 360 for the newest games? (e.g, they require a certain dashboard?). To use the Wii online shop, you need to have 4.2 firmware.Niode wrote:Put simply. Consumers don't have any rights whatsoever over their own hardware. Sony did remove the Linux feature. Nintendo did remove the ability to play DVD-R from the newest Wii. (Not sure that DVD-R playability was ever a real feature on the Wii).

removing product functions is not the same as updating it. But once more gamers get treated like crap, cause no consumer protection group considers gaming serious enough to do something about that.Niode wrote:Put simply. but PSP updates is nothing like that. They want to keep pirates of their system. Makes sense to me.
This is like buying a house and turning it into an illegal casino. It's yours, you can do anything with it, but you can't expect illegal action to be tolerated.

I just want to say I'm not defending Sony. Or anybody. And hell, I've modded my PSP to play homebrew. So whatever. I'm just saying, don't be shocked by the fact that Sony isn't making it EASY on you if you want to hack their shit. That's all.

On the 360 you don't really have the same problem, the way the copy protection works is based on the DVD Drive firmware, updating your 360 to the latest dash board just requires you to flash your DVD drive at the same time to something compatible, however I'm pretty sure there are chips that get around this anyway. The game copies are exact 1:1 copies, you can't 'crack' them, if you did, it alters the hash and makes the software completely unbootable. With the Wii, the DVD playback was never a feature of the console anyway. Hacks added the functionality to the system via software.gtmtnbiker wrote:I'm not well versed on XBox360 but I don't see how Nintendo/Microsoft is different from Sony.
