Re: PSP firmware is lame
So you bought a 4x4 Nissan truck, dropped a Chevy V-8 small block into it and you're complaining that the 4 wheel drive doesn't work anymore and that Nissan are jerks for making your truck not work on hills and in deep mud?

yeah, I always think it's kind of odd that people seem to expect that for some strange reason Sony (in this case, but whichever company) is going to just shrug and co-operate with pirates.Hobie-wan wrote:So you bought a 4x4 Nissan truck, dropped a Chevy V-8 small block into it and you're complaining that the 4 wheel drive doesn't work anymore and that Nissan are jerks for making your truck not work on hills and in deep mud?
Re: PSP firmware is lame
Where'd you come up with that analogy?
I can play most UMD games. Daxter, Tekken Dark Resurrection, Lumines, Wipeout Pure... They run fine.
Soul Calibur has a new system check installed inside it. Sony or Namco wrote new code for this.
So, no, I can't really buy your 4x4 Nissan truck analogy. This is more like a tool company creating unique bits for their tools that only fit on their brand, or a record company that makes their player with an oversized spool so standard LP's won't run on theirs.

When a company develops software, they have to test it on different platforms. For Sony, this means testing it on PSP 1000, 2000, 3000, & Go. They have a requirement (for whatever reason to use 5.55). They'll verify that it works on 5.55 and newer. They'll test to make sure older firmwares will update to 5.55 if the game is placed in the system.
If you're using CFW, all bets are off on things working properly. You're on your own.
This is true for all companies when they develop/sell products.
Hobie gave a good example that is easy to understand.

I think the analogy that Hobie made was spot on. Who developed CFW? Was it Sony? Why would they try to make sure their games work with CFW when there are so many variants out there? What good does it do for them?Anayo wrote: So, no, I can't really buy your 4x4 Nissan truck analogy. yeah I don't understand why anyone would think that Sony SHOULD do quality control on CFW, which is something that HELPS piracy -- which they are trying to prevent.gtmtnbiker wrote:

Check the terms of service, or whatever equivalent document they have for the psp. I guarantee you it says that if you modify the system software you're shit out of luck. Pretty much all electronics are like this. It sucks, and I understand the philosophical problems people have with it, but that's just how it is.Anayo wrote:Sony designed the PSP phat I'm using, but I own it. Is there any legislation in place dictating the programs I can and can't execute with it? By my line of thinking, I should be able to do anything from install something radically different from what it was meant to do, or even destroy the thing with a jackhammer, without having to answer to Sony.
The issue isn't legality, it's the incentive I have to play by Sony's rules. With custom firmware, I get functionality that isn't available otherwise. I generally don't pirate. Most of the 16-bit games I emulate with it are things I own in my genesis collection anyway. All my PSP games are legit originals.
The bottom line is, I bought Soul Calibur on a Sony-stamp-of-approval UMD so I could pop it in my system and play it, but they've installed circumvention that won't let me, presumably to make me want to play by their rules.

I put rocket fuel in my vaccuum and it started a fire in my house. I am so mad at Black & Decker for making a vaccuum that I can't do what I want with.
