New Mortal Kombat movie

Go take a look at NC-17 in Wiki and you'll be surprised how many R-rated movies had to either edit or appeal to get an R rating.

In case you don't want to bother looking: American Pie, American Psycho, The Cooler, Hostel, House of 1000 Corpses, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Kill Bill, Monster's Ball, Pulp Fiction, Saw, II and III, Team America: World Police, and many, many more.

And how did Kill bill solve its problem? The amount needed to be edited out isn't much when considering the content of the rest of the movie.

It didn't, it just cut to black and white in a particular scene, which allowed it to get away with more.

Either way, I think this film looks horrible. The dialog is forced and unnatural, the actors are overdoing it, and the plot's apparently a "violent and gritty" update of Bloodsport. What is this, and what does it have to do with Mortal Kombat? It feels more like everything that's wrong with video game movies. I can just see the board meeting now:

"Hey guys, what do gamers like?"

"Crappy plots that sound like it was written by a thirteen-year-old, pointless and extreme violence, and television actors trying as hard as they can to act 'cool.'"

"It's brilliant!"

Kind of ironic considering mortal kombat originally was going to be a game based on Bloodsport starring Van Damme more or less. Not to mention the fact that the original game gained notoriety pretty much through "pointless and extreme violence".

Here's the problem I have. The original Mortal Kombat movie was essentially just the original game, with a few elements taken from MK2. The fighting was fun, you had all your favorite characters in their costumes, and it was overall pretty close to the source. With this one they're trying to make it "realisitic", so instead of Baraka being a guy from Outland where his entire race looks like him he's actually a crazy plastic surgeon.

The only good thing I took from this trailer was that Scorpion is the protagonist. We all know Scorpion is the best character in the series.

True, but to counter the complaints the series received it also began moving in an extremely campy and cartoony direction, adding in Friendships, even more wholly unrealistic characters, and more unrealistic fatalities, while moving away from its JCVD starting point.

As a gamer, I'm resigned to say that, for the average gamer, that's probably not far off.

That's because of the real reason behind the fights: a multi-realm clothing consortium created the tournament in order to promote their line of fightwear.

Looks like we finally got an answer.

A tweet from RZA of Wu-Tang says that the director of this project is Kevin Tancharoen, whose previous work includes "Dancelife" and other dance related TV shows.

Update 5:50pm: It appears Latino Review is saying this is a test shoot that was done "for Warner Brothers to get funding for a full blown hard 'R' MK movie." They confirm it was Kevin Tancharoen who directed it, along with revealing most of the rest of the cast. This is more likely something the director pitched to Warner Bros himself along with some industry backers. If Warner Bros. wanted it made they wouldn't have leaked it especially if it differs much from the massive marketing plan that is about to launch for Mortal Kombat 9 next week. It's very likely it is a rejected pitch that the people behind it wanted to get out to drum up some support for their vision of a Mortal Kombat remake.

Update 6/9/2010: Another confirmation that this was a pitch to Warner Bros. regarding a director's vision of remaking the Mortal Kombat movie series. Actress, Jeri Ryan, confirms on her Twitter account that it was a pitch to studio heads for director Kevin Tancharoen.

It appears that finally there is an answer to this mystery video. It was not produced by Warner Bros. and neither was it produced to hype the upcoming Mortal Kombat 9 video game. Granted, the timing of this release couldn't be better. E3 2010 is just around the corner and everyone has Mortal Kombat on the brain. It has definitely gotten the attention of the Internet and it is spreading like wildfire. It seems like an even bigger stage is now set for the unveiling of Mortal Kombat 9.
