Racketboy Forums in Comparison to Others

Post by philipofmacedon »

Hey guys,

This week I was reading the comments under a post over at Infendo and I just had to stop. Maybe it was the insane non sequiturs or lack of coherent sentences and paragraphs or just I ceased to care about whether Nintendo rulez and MS + Sony 311t suxors! I immediately thought to myself, I really enjoy not seeing this stuff at the Racketboy forums. Don't get me wrong, I love reading sites like Destructoid for the total lack of tastefulness, but that's not the same as wading through verbal garbage. It got me to wondering - why do you suppose things are better here?

Is it just that retro gamers represent a generally older segment of the population? Or one that looks past superficial things like flashy graphics and marketing's siren call of "NEW, NEW, NEW?" I've read on the Underground Gamer forums that one of the benefits of not including the newest games is that it keeps the site from attracting an immature and greedy element.

Do you suppose that Retro gamers are generally less inclined to fanboyism? Some of my friends have solely given their allegiance to the 360 or the Wii and won't hear talk of playing those other "inferior" games. For me I really couldn't care less that Sega does what Nintendon't. For me it's enough that Lords of Thunder's soundtrack rocks my face off. That game is like a damn time machine back to a world of guitar riffs and sword and sandal heroes.

Anyway, I enjoy old games regardless of platform and kind of have a hard time imagining people could really divide themselves over what platform the software existed on. How could some seriously ask me to pick between Sonic and Zelda? Ghouls and Ghosts or Megaman X? The only reason as I kid I didn't have more consoles was money and that I'd never even heard of the PC Engine.

Anyway, that's my biweekly rant.

P.S. I didn't even mention PC gaming.

I'm really not sure how this forum has stayed so "mature". Maybe we set the bar high to start with and anybody that joins in realized they have to keep up with the rest of us.

All I know is that I love this place, even if it wasn't my site. It seems to have the perfect balance of everything that makes a forum great.

And no, not all retro sites are without fanboyism. If you go to some exclusive Nintendo, Sega, or SNK sites, you'll see some fanboyism.
