Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Loved it. Not Burton's best, but even his worst is still better than the best of many other directors out there.

Ugh. I disagree. I haven't seen Alice, but with the possible exception of Big Fish, I don't think Burton has made a good movie since 1994's Ed Wood. I think he's extremely overrated, coasting on a rep he built in a 5-10 year period 15-20 years ago.

If there isn't a "bazinga" @ the end of that, someone's gonna get shot in the face!

And recently, I saw the '91 movie Popcorn, about a killer that strikes a film festival showing '50s sci-fi and horror flicks (all three of which imploy a Castle-esque gimmick). Not bad, but not brilliant.

I haven't liked Tim Burton since he decided to have Johnny Depp play the same character (all of which remind me of Jack Skelington (sp?) in each of his movies.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I prefer my Sleepy Hollow with Jeff Goldblum and Dick Butkus.



In all honesty, I didn't care for Burton's take on that book - it proved to me that he works much better with more original/novel stories. With the exception of what he did with Batman, his other adaptations of popular fiction have been fairly horrid. I'd put Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Ed Wood up against Hollow, Alice, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory any day. Basically, all he does now is just Burton-ize a story by adding Johnny Depp, strange effects and settings, and a coaxing a forced/faux creepiness out of the original material.

I watched Jacob's Ladder yesterday- I enjoyed it but did not think that it was as freaky as everyone made it out to be. Is that because most of the general public saw it and aren't exposed to weirder? or because I watch lots of really messed up stuff? I will have to think about that

Just finished it.. This movie is Very Good, better than the Sixth Sense at any rate. This is a philosophical/mythological drama not a horror movie, I don't know who pitched it to you as one but they're certainly quite mistaken. I also liked how they didn't try to hide the final 'twist'.

It wasn't pitched to me as a horror movie, just a weird one and certainly freaky at parts, I just did not think it was as bad as people made it out to be---regardless, I loved the movie

I wonder was this the first movie that used the shaky heads technique? (no not the fishing one )



I did end up watching Outland. A nice scifi movie but the effects look pretty dated compared to Blade Runner, which was filmed during the same period (and produced by the Ladd company!).. Loved the Ladd logo rasterisation too. (isn't this what the technique is called?)

I watched 3 movies last night

Cabin Fever- hilarious, good time, nice gore-B+

Night of the Demons- classic 80's teen horror flick, this one just seems to hold a special place in my heart-B+

Broken- dimension extreme British release about a guy who kidnaps chicks, makes them go through a Saw like test, if they pass, congrats! you get to live in the woods as his slave woman- that mixed with some weird psychological questions made for a decent movie-C

I just finished Carrie, first time watching it surprisingly, I really enjoyed it, If not for the awesome cast, then ****** SPOILER********for Carrie's mom getting pinned to the wall at the end*****end spoiler*****

I saw this again like a week or two ago, but forgot to post. As far as I know, it was the first big war movie to shoot (pun) for realism. I can't stand those 1960's, 50's, 40's, ect. style war movies that are always so clean and unrealistic.

Platoon is great, but far from the first "gritty" or "realistic" war movie. Just a sample of great war films that fit your criteria and predate Platoon (1986) would be:

Apocalypse Now
The Deer Hunter
Paths of Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front
Patton
The Dirty Dozen
Das Boot

and many others I could come up with if I thought about it a while...

Go check out some of these, you'll see some of the inspiration for something like Platoon and enhance your appreciation of the genre.

The Killing Fields is another well-done 80s gritty war movie. The Khmer Rouge were so fecked up it's beyond crazy.
