I was addicted to it, I guess. But didn't like it. I think I finished it because of the novelty of it and the fact I plunked too much kizzash down for it. In retrospect, I've characterized it as the video-game equivalent of a choose-your-own-adventure book -- only not as literate.
People seem to love it, tho. I dislike it the more I think about it.
But I was strangely addicted to it. Probably the Madison kick.
So Anyone else addicted to Heavy Rain?

This is my concern, I don't like when gameplay is sacrificed for story. Though I like a lot of PC SCUMM adventure games because they provide gameplay in the form of interesting puzzles to solvedurkada wrote:I was addicted to it, I guess. But didn't like it. To add to it, I think the story is terrible. The key idea is fine, but the execution encompasses everything that is hackneyed and silly in suspense films. If you watched this, solely as a film, I suspect you would consider it one of the worst. But, its not just a movie -- its a series of quicktime events that are, very often, difficult to control. The worst aspect of these are when the game tries to maintain its sense of real-time, as if you are going to die any second because of X -- and yet, you can spend twenty minutes trying to do something incredibly basic like turn a door knob while deadly X waits. Imagine if X were a meteor plummetting from the sky and is about 10 feet, in a blur over your head -- trigger the quick time event, but if you get it wrong, you just try again while the meteor sorta wobbles 10 feet over your head. This really kills whatever suspension of disbelief it may have been building. Of course, there is no meteor. I made up an example -- no less ridiculous -- so as to not spoil the plot. Which would happen if I chose a real scene from the game.Gamerforlife wrote:This is my concern, I don't like when gameplay is sacrificed for story. The thing that really killed it for me, beyond the controls, beyond the story, was that the game was relatively brainless. There is a murder mystery to be solved. You don't get to solve it as a player. You just have to click a bunch of stuff an Agent has collected. You do not play an active role in solving the puzzle. All that happens is, depending on how the events in the game unfold, different endings will take place. The actual identity of the origami killer remains constant, but a character may be happy in one ending, sad or dead in another.
Its a nice idea. Make the player interaction matter, and involve the player in the puzzle, and it would be golden. Oh, and get a good script!
