Is Digital Press reliable?

Post by Hagane Hiryu »

I'm pretty new to collecting and I'm really into SNES games right now. I've been using DP to find the research the rarest games so I know what to keep an eye out for. Now here is my question. Are the rarity scores that DP gives games generally thought to be correct? I've been looking on eBay a lot, and one game I really want is Wild Guns which is given a rarity score of 5 by DP. There is only 2 or 3 on eBay right now and none of them are in very good condition, but it seems like there are never many on there. Now take Fun N Games and Chavez II. They have both been given a rarity score of 8 which is really high yet both seem to be pretty available and neither go for much more than $10.

I know price is no indication of rarity, but I'm just wondering how reliable DP is when games like Ninja Warriors(6), Wild Guns(5), and Hagane(4) seem to hardly ever show up and Fun N Games and Chavez II (both 8) are not scarce. I realize that the latter two may not be in high demand but if they're really an 8 they still shouldn't be as available as they are. Any way what is your guys opinion on the matter?

Hello Hagane, DP does indeed have a forum of their own, so you can try asking there. We don't like talking behind people's backs :D

I figured I had a much better chance of getting an objective opinion here.

I think their rarity scores are pretty reliable. But rare does not necessarily equal high value. There needs to be some demand for the game as well.

They are fairly accurate, but it's not 100%. It will give you a good idea of thing at least.

Since Rarity ≠ quality (nor value), it might just be that some games are more sold than others. Wild Guns took me a while to get hold of as well because I'm sure people are reluctant to sell it. Chrono Trigger certainly isn't rare and there are more copies floating around than ebay would seem to indicate, but people tend to hold on to that one as well. I have found instances where their rarity indication does seem off to me as well, but it could just be that I've been lucky and seen a lot of copies of that particular game. For instance there are games that are apparently rare that I remember seeing everywhere back when it was new. Maybe each store had 1 copy that just never sold, who knows.

Okay. I was just making sure if there wasn't something that everyone else knew that I had missed. Thank you for your responses.

The problem with Digital Press--and indeed all video game rarity guides--is that they assume rarity is universal. The rarity of game X varies from place to place.

I have two copies of Wild Guns. One complete with box and everything and the other, just a loose cart. I'll never part with my complete one, but the exra loose cart I might be willing to give away for a trade or some money maybe
