*sigh* friggin RROD

Post by kenshin-dono »

So i got myself a RROD on my 360. this is actually my 3rd xbox. I got one a long time ago and it started to crap out. it would get disk read errors. Luckily i had bought a warranty at the store at the time for like 25 bucks (think it was EB backw hen they existed) and i swaped it out for a new one.. that was DOA out of the box! So i took it back imediatly and got this one that now gave me the dreaded RROD

Im pretty sure its out of warrenty. The mfctr date is 7-2006. I didn't buy it around then though, i think i bought ita t the very start of 2007 Xbox site shows it out of warranty. I'll try calling them and see if i can get it repaired for free but i seriously doubt it.

These things are such piles of junk. I dont know anyone who isn't at least on their 2nd one.

Anyway, does anyone know a good repair guide to fix these things? Ive got an average level ot technical skills im sure if i have a decent guide i can pop it open and mess with the screwed up solder/ect. I just need to know what i need to replace and what to remove. i did some goggling but most of the videos that look good you have to pay for or something. Most of the other stuff is stupid towel tricks. I want to actually open it, pull the bad solder off, resolder it, and replace the xclamp or whatever else needs to be swapped out. Maybe put a better heatsink in?

I really dont want to go buy another xbox. I just realized i droped over 1500 bucks the past month or two on retro grames on ebay =P

so can anyone point me to a good guide?

That sucks dude. You hear about this all the time but I am still on my first one, thankfully.

Well, good luck with a fix.

I had to fix my xbox once and used a RROD fix kit from ebay. Just search RROD repair kit and they are all over the place. Mine still works after using it. All you do is replace the x clamps with the screws and your good to go. Or just get a PS3 :D

My 360 broke.
I didn't get a new one, I sent it in and fixed it.
I am not on my second one, just my first, and they fixed it.
Common misconception.

Any 360 made in 05-07 is guaranteed to break

RROD is very easy to fix.
You are lucky you didn't get an E74 error.

Without a ball grid rework station, you will not be able to resolder the GPU. Ball grid stations are pretty expensive, that's why everyone tries to make due with replacing the x-clamps and heating the unit by overheating or with a heat gun.

http://www.focalspot.com/rework.htm

Find a video that shows you how to replace the x-clamps with screws and nuts. Maybe 'baking' the GPU with the fan only pointing at the CPU after swapping the x-clamps will work, maybe careful warming with a heat gun after that will work. There are a few people in my area that advertise on craigslist for a BG rework for $50 or so, but then I'm in a big city area.

if it such an easy fix then point me to a guide on how to do it =P And no, if your xbox 360 broke you are not still on your first one. A replacement 360 is a second one

lol @ hobie-wan ... alright, i guess im not melting and redoing the solder o_O I guess this x clamp fix is the only way i can fix this.. is there any thing else i need to do?

i saw a few videos refering to changing the clamps.. i dont see a point in buying a replacement kit. I checked ebay and it looks like its 10 bucks and up for some nuts and screws. I can probably go down to orchard and get the propper screws much cheaper, i just need a good concise video on how to open the thing and what to swap out, or an online guide with a few pics. Has anyone repaired theirs or know where i can find a good one? My google searches are turning up cheap garbage like sticking pennies on it, towel trick, ect.

one other question.. does arctic silver have a shelf life if its been opened? I have some i used a few years ago. Not sure if i should snag another one

No No you misunderstand
They just replace the gpu.(Or whatever depending on problem) The rest isn't replaced. Let me explain

Example, Incorrect "My 360 broke, had a disc read error. Sent it in and now I am on my second one" When in actuality it should be "My 360 broke, had a disc read error. Sent it in and they fixed it" Still the same 360, it is just fixed. (Unless it's fucked up then they will give you a new one)

Let me repeat. Most often they do not replace them. It is not a replacement

i didn't send it in. I had an extended warranty at EB and just brought it in and they gave me another new one. The 2nd one i took home and it was DEAD OUT THE BOX. so i took that right back and got the 3rd, which is this one that now gave me a RROD

so i am literally on my 3rd console

i was wondering if i cant get it working. Does costco still have that crazy return policy? I.e. i buy one there and i can take it back in another few years when it inevitably dies? I knwo they used to years ago

love your avatar btw

Yes, I know YOU are on your 3rd console. But you corrected me saying I was on my second, and I even explain myself in my original post. http://www.squidoo.com/xbox_360_red_rin ... o_guide123 That might give you some insight.

Yeah, you can just get the screws and washers yourself. The Arctic Silver you have will be fine as you can still squeeze it out of the tube. Plenty of videos showing you how to get the 360 open, then just find one that talks about the screw and washer technique for how many you need and a general idea.

I'd find a video and disassemble your 360. Once you've taken the studs out of a heatsink, take one of those with you to the hardware store so you can buy screws with the right diameter and threads. If you have an Ace or a little local hardware store with the loose screws in the bins, it will be easier than a Home Depot trying to match screws in the plastic bags. Make sure the screws don't have thick round heads. You want pan headed screws so the board will fit back in the metal tray without the screws pushing on it.
