Re: Different ways to play games other than the original medium?
Thanks a ton for the advice and responses everyone.
I knew I would get a lot of mod and emulate responses... I should have mentioned I don't want to go that route. Just for various reasons I'd rather purchase the game.
Seems like some varied opinions on using the VC or collection discs. It helps to know that the games run the same as the originals. I think I'd probably rather have collection discs for the most part... but I don't know.. too many choices.
Also CRTGAMER, that was a very cool looking chart comparing the sizes of everything. Thanks for that. Although I have an original 20GB PS3, so it is backwards compatible.
Thanks for the links as well.
I'll probably go collection discs when I can... and use the VC or PS store when I need to.
I really need TMNT II Arcade! It isn't on the VC yet. Did it ever make it to a collection disc?

It's on XBLA (with online multiplayer) and it's also on TMNT II: Battle Nexus for the Gamecube...though you have to play through a very shitty game to unlock it.l0whit07 wrote:I really need TMNT II Arcade! It isn't on the VC yet. Did it ever make it to a collection disc?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Well if you don't want to emulate, then I'm going to agree with everyone else and tell you to just get a slim ps2.
Aside from the countless retro compilations on it, you have very good full ps1 compatibility as well (MUCH better than the ps3's), not to mention the fact that the ps2 library itself is excellent.

Flake: That is some of the best news I've heard in a long time! OK so that was a little exaggerated but that is great! I've seen those Turtles games on the cube and always wondered. I guess that is my next purchase. Anyone want to sell it to me, with the memory card it is unlocked on
!
AppleQueso: I haven't used the backwards capability on my PS3 very much at all. Is it not very good? How is it for both PS1 and PS2?
Thanks again.

Ps2, I personally haven't had any issues at all (keep in mind I have a 60gb PS2, so my b/c is hardware), however on ps1 I've had numerous problems, ranging from strange graphical errors to games totally hanging. If you have the 80gb ps3, then I imagine your problems with ps2 will be a lot greater.l0whit07 wrote:Flake: That is some of the best news I've heard in a long time! I have a 20GB PS3. It was a launch model alongside the 60GB. Got it in December after it was released in November?
How do you know if it is hardware or software BC?

20 and 60gb were all hardware b/c.l0whit07 wrote:I have a 20GB PS3. It was a launch model alongside the 60GB. Got it in December after it was released in November?

the first 80gb models were software.
all the rest (including the 40gb, which came out after the 80gb) have no ps2 compatibility at all.

Re: Different ways to play games other than the original medium?
As many others have mentioned I would go with the retro compilation discs. Physical medium is the way to go if possible. There are plenty on PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube such as Sonic Gems Collection, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, Mega Man X Collection, Midways Classic Vol.1,2, Capcom Classics Collection, etc. I do download classic remakes if digital distribution is only way to own them or if it's a great deal in some cases.

If you're going to mod any system to run emulated games, mod an Xbox!
