Metal Slug 4 & 5
Re: Metal Slug 4 & 5
I love the MS anthology (PS2) and have noticed no problems, no slow-downs, etc. I'm not sure what people are noticing or complaining about - is there a review somewhere that specifies these supposed problems?
I have a tendency to think that the emulated Neo Geo compilations get shat on simply because Neo Geo owners are pissy that an excellent compilation of games they've spent thousands on can be found for under $20. As a result, they find the tiniest little imperfections in emulation and blow them out of proportion. It's a great collection and I highly recommend it.

I have the anthology and thought it played fine. Then again, I'm haven't been too picky on it when comparing it to the originals.

I agree with this statement. I got the Wii version and notice no slow down or blurriness, and yes I am fine with the controls.dsheinem wrote:I love the MS anthology (PS2) and have noticed no problems, no slow-downs, etc. I'm not sure what people are noticing or complaining about - is there a review somewhere that specifies these supposed problems?

Re: Metal Slug 4 & 5
I don't own a Neo, and I don;t give a damn what people paid for the real carts, the compilation just looks and plays like crap for the PS2. (The Wii port featured 480p so it's fine as far as looks go.)
As for the display I'm playing it on a 27'' flat screen Sony Trinitron television via S-video and can see all the defects quite clearly. Basically the image for the game on the PS2 ends up windowboxed and the whole game runs in a blurry, filtered 480i resolution.
The easiest comparison I have is Street Fighter III Third Strike on the DC when let boot in it's Dreamcast filtered 480i mode. There is a huge amount of interlace and the filtering makes the game a blurry mess. Meanwhile if you hold down L + Start when it boots the game will run in 240p which will look absolutely fantastic as the 240p mode is displaying the game on your TV identically to when you played it on an RGB arcade monitor. While not as sharp (Depends on the cable type you have hooked up, type of TV etc..) or colorful as it won't be RGB, it'll still be the next best thing.
I wouldn't have had any problem if they'd have left the games on the Metal Slug Anthology in their original 240p mode which would yield crisp clear smooth lines and a sharp as razorblades picture on my set, not a crappy washed out blurfest.
To those of you playing this on an HDTV, (Besides the fact that HD Displays are unable to actually display 240p) you likely won't notice anything because you're already feeding an SD signal to an HD display thus yielding a crap picture. (I'm seriously passionate about getting my stuff to look damn good and doing it for cheap.)
For those of you wondering what 240p is, it's progressive standard definition and is compatible with any SDTV via any SDTV cable (RF, Composite, S-Video, Component). In fact the Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PS1, N64 and all other consoles in the Pre-PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era used it as their de-facto display standard with all consoles from last gen having compatible 240p modes as well if the games called for it. To be honest this is just a case of the team behind MS Anthology just being lazy. Then again what else would you expect from the great and mighty Playmore?

Re: Metal Slug 4 & 5
The Virtual Console version is fantastic, sharp lines, accurate music, all the features of the home port on the AES such as saving your progress for later and surprisingly an actual 240p mode when played on an SDTV!bladerunner wrote:So what emulated versions for current consoles are considered the best?

Re: Metal Slug 4 & 5
I haven't noticed anything wrong with the Anthology either other than some slow down for MS1 but the original may have been that way. Guess I have not looked close enough, it has been a little bit since I have fired it up too.

I played all the games on the anthology on a 27" SDTV. I didn't notice any bluriness. I also played it on an HDTV with a BC PS3. I didn't notice any problem there, either. I've also played all the Playmore SNK anthologies - they are all solid.

Re: Metal Slug 4 & 5
Let me put it this way, my TV rips apart screwy signals. Because of the weird resolution forcing the emulator is doing I have o play through the game in a windowbox and along with the other defects I can safely say that the anthology is crap.dsheinem wrote:I played all the games on the anthology on a 27" SDTV. Now just the solo ports of 3 on the Xbox along with the standalone port of 4&5 on both the Xbox and PS2 are great thanks to their 240p option.

I've noticed most people who have this game have it on PS2 and not the Wii; back on track, I have the Wii version and notice no slowdown, even on Co-Op.pepharytheworm wrote:I agree with this statement. I have the MS anthology on ps2 as well, and have noticed very clear input delay on the games, especially compared to using a ps controller via a usb adapter + MAME on my pc.
