It won because VHS format Porn was cheaper than Beta format porn. No lie, this is actually a well documented fact and literally got mentioned in an old textbook of mine!

Actually I believe that Beta had no porn and VHS did and that that is why VHS won the format war.
No, both had porn, but after about a year all porn shifted from both Beta/VHS to a full VHS market creating a huge spike in demand for VCR's.

Think of it like the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war after the PS3 was released. Basically such a huge spike in demand for the then cheaper PS3 with it's Blu-ray player is similar to the situation in the 80's with VCR's costing hundreds less than Beta machines. Not to mention VHS tapes also cost $15-$30 less than a comparable VHS at the time.

Yea, but.
Blu-ray hasn't really had an impact like vhs(mainly because there are other options). A lot of people I know just use dvds, and I just stream HD movies.

Beta had higher video quality then VHS but only one hour worth of tape. VHS in standard play could support recording a two hour movie. The beta could only do two hours if in reduced quality beta II mode. I also heard the Porn market killed the Beta.

having owned both a Betamax and several VHS's, I'd dare say that I've always been more fond of the VHS

this was mainly due to the larger library of movies (in general, not only pr0n), but do keep in mind that this was very late in both of their life-spans

these days I have DVD-players all over the place (as in my Xbox1 has one, my PS2 has one, my PC has one and I've got 2-3 "standard" DVD-players in the basement)

needless to say, I've more DVD-players than I'll ever need

I do love the way that DVD's work and the fact that they'll (probably) last me longer, etc.

but being very poor, I can hardly (if ever) afford any kind of DVD (yes. $10 is a lot of money to me), hence my local flea-market has an abundance of VHS's instead, which goes for something like $2.50/movie

since I gave up hope on the movie-industry years ago, most of the movies I'm interested in are available as VHS, which suits me fine

of course I try to invest in DVD's whenever I come across a film which is sorely missing from my collection (that's a lot of movies), but if I'm just looking for a film, which I remember being great when growing up, I'll usually just get the VHS copy of it instead

(yes, I can and do stream films on-line as well, but I like having an actual tape/cover, etc. in my shelf)

I've yet to see such classics as "The Gate" on DVD, that doesn't necessarily mean that it does not exist, but I dare say that it's far easier (for me at least), to just wander off to *insert random flea-market/salvation-army/other store here* and find a copy of it way cheaper than I'll ever be able to dig up the same on DVD

I don't know if it was released in Sweeden, but you can buy The Gate on DVD here in the US. It's also available in the UK, so I know a PAL version was released. Link

What do you mean "gave up on"? You mean you don't like today's movies, or are they too expensive, or what?

partly I cannot afford watching movies of today, but that does not mean that I cannot have access to them, through the wonders of technology

but in all honesty, I don't think there has been made anything interesting enough to warrant a purchase for years

sure, I love me Battle Royale and Kontrol and Cidade de Deus: but apart from those I've not seen anything worth my time for many, many years

Peter Jackson took a turn into fame and left his true fans behind, Tarantino and his "Kill Bill" (which I turn off after about 10 minutes of play) isn't really anything worthwhile (then again, I mainly like 4 rooms as the peak of his films), as long as Tim Burton has Johnny Depp so far up his ass that he can't breathe, even less so move, without him, I find little-to-no interest in his films

I may be looking in the wrong direction and focusing on the wrong films, which is the main reason why I am studying the film/series threads on this forum

I have a very, very, very hard time with CGI, since I'm more of a stop-motion kind-of-guy (for example; The Gate, Critters, Gremlins, Sindbad, etc.)

there just hasn't been anything worth my time in the past couple of years
sure once every blue moon a film will pop up that captures my interest, but almost every time it feels like a let-down

I may be too narrow in my views on art in general, but when the same concept is done over and over and over again, I tend to lose interest

I don't watch TV, so I don't know the trailers of the latest movies, but I do spend time on the internet and read ordinary people's reviews of the latest movies, I've only yet to see any of them spark my interest

If you like stop-motion, check out Coraline. It has some of the best, most detailed stop motion I've ever seen. I think Henry Selick might be the bastard child of Ray Harryhausen.

Agreed. I absolutely hate what CGI has done to movies. Case in point: The old Star Wars and the newer Star Wars. Back in the day it was all card board, paper mache, and christmas lights. That's what it took to create the future.

Now they can film the movie and spend months in post production creating a reality, they can control every pixel of the film...and it looks more fake to me than the card board.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
