I don't know what to say,
iPhone and iPad already are too powerful and ipod touch is closely priced to the PSP.
What can Sony do?
looks like handheld gaming only machines are dying.
I think Sony should do this:
They are already involved in pc's, mocies+music, and mobile market.
They should release their own version of andriod/iphone . It can be all in one thing. I am already guessing psp's market is not 9 year olds, so if you are older you like 13, you probably are interested in a cellphone + media player.
Sony could win with their hardcore titles, compared to Apple's casual gamers.
Thats all i could think of.
NIntendo will keep selling hand-helds, because people will buy anything under-powered and weak compared to current technology from Nintendo. If they go head-to-head with cutting edge technology they keep losing
DS vs PSP-WIN!
Gameboy vs Any colored handheld-WIN!
Snes vs Neo-Geo, 3DO, Jaguar 64-WIN!
64 vs PSX-FAIL!
Gamecube vs XBOX, ps2-FAIL!
Wii vs 360/PS3-WIN!
Your Thoughts On The PSP2
Re: Your Thoughts On The PSP2
I doubt Sony will waste more R&D monies on another redundant physical medium, but hey it's Sony it's their speciality.Weekend_Warrior wrote:So I'm thinking maybe they will develop some sort of mini-Bluray disc, or possibly go back to cartridges in the form of Flash media or something.
Sony are (is? Feck it I'm tired of addressing companies as individuals) stumped on this one. They know they can't rely on their customers because the PSP and PS3 aren't the runaway successes Sony had hoped they would have become. The PSP isn't the walkman of videogaming, the DS is. Sony as a brand has never been about thinking outside the box (Fecking cliche), but if the PSP2 is going be a strong worldwide contender they will have to adhere to what makes portable gaming appealing to the masses, the Playstation® Generation® has mostly moved on.

Re: Your Thoughts On The PSP2
Yeah, as stated before the PSP2 needs to competitively priced not towards the 3ds but the iphone. Heck, I got a iPod touch instead of PSP because of pricing. Sony also needs to try to win back some of their consumer base from Apple that they lost. My greatest concern is that if games are going to be a physical format or downloadable only.

Re: Your Thoughts On The PSP2
I think the PSP2 will fail miserably if it tries to directly compete with the iPhone or other smartphones, as in the PSP2 directly incorporating phone functions. I think the most poignant thing Sony can do to make the next-gen PSP stand out is make it powerful enough that it will take phones a while to catch up. The iPhone just recently matched the PSP's graphical potential with the game Chaos Rings, which is bad news for Sony. Also, we gamers still like to play games with tactile buttons. It's very important that Sony keeps these, and adds enough to match the Dualshock controller. They can use official PS2 emulation as a selling point, just as they did with the PSP and PS1. To summarize, I think that if Sony continues to classify and prove the PSP as a game console, not a phone, they'll do just fine.

Re: Your Thoughts On The PSP2
They'll find a way to screw up the PSP2, they always find a way to screw something up somehow.
Anyway, I couldn't care less about another analog nub, and I agree, in order for Sony to make any money off of this, they need to NOT copy the iPhone, DS etc. They need to make it appeal to the people that bought the last PSP and the PS3, but, also have it appeal to other people as well without copying the systems used by Nintendo etc.

Older. Not wiser.
Re: Your Thoughts On The PSP2
Sony haven't got a chance. They've been completely irrelevant as a portable device manufacturer for quite some time now. The announcement of the PSP2 with 'front and rear camera and large touchscreen' sounds exactly like the iPhone 4G. They're going to have to do something special to convince people to buy a PSP2 over an iPhone 4G, especially since Apple don't have their head up their ass as far as games pricing goes (it's up to the publisher on the appstore). Sony will want to charge £30 per game for download titles, and nobody will pay for it, just like they wouldn't pay for it on the Go.swiftzx wrote:Yeah, as stated before the PSP2 needs to competitively priced not towards the 3ds but the iphone. Sony seriously needs a fucking slap, somebody needs to go into that company and slap ken kutaragi or whatever the head of the gaming devision is. They need to make him realise that people simply won't pay RRP for download titles, not when the physical thing can be bought for less, or an alternative can be bought from the App Store for less than a price of coffee. Sony are just arrogant, and that is their biggest problem and it's one of the reason they aren't successful anymore, it's one of the reasons the PS3 was (is?) a flop and PSPGO a complete and utter disaster. Sony are the new 80s Atari.
on a side note @ Lisalover, I don't think Sony have ever pushed the PS1 'emulation' as a selling point. They barely even make it a point that you can use the PS1 games you buy on PSN on your PSP.

I agree with Niode. If Sony markets the PSP2 as a portable "PS2.5" they'll be back to square one.
I'll eat my words if Sony pulls it off, just as I did when the DS pipped the PSP and frankly I wasn't expecting that.

The Pandora's ARM processor is only 600MHz. I doubt that will be enough for DC emulation, except maybe 2D games. And let's face it no one is that dedicated to optimise nullDC for ARM processors, but I might be proven wrong. I'm just saying don't have high hopes for 6th gen console emulation on handhelds in the foreseeable future. I doubt the PSP2 will do PS2 emulation either, unless they implement a similar instruction set, and they already did that with the PSP.lisalover1 wrote: I know that DC emulation will become somewhat possible with the release of the Pandora, which gives me hope that the PSP2 will push it over the edge into comfortable playing speeds.

at the 00:59 mark, Patch makes a prediction that the PSP2 may have two cameras, like the DSi, and try to compete against the iPhone.
Hopefully Sony will shed something about its handheld future later in E3.
