Your Thoughts On The PSP2

Post by lisalover1 »

We all know it's going to happen sooner or later, and rumors have even begun to surface that Sony has already started development on a successor to the PSP. Some even say that we may hear of it in this year's E3! Anyway, what would you want or expect in a PSP2?

First, if there's one thing I've heard PSP owners complaining about and asking for since day one was a second analog nub. The PSP's analog nub is pretty good already, so sticking another one on, a la the Dualshock's layout would be a no-brainer for the new handheld.

Second, I would like Sony to continue releasing games in physical format. This is highly unlikely, given the release of the PSP Go [although catastrophic failure; the PSP Go's worldwide sales didn't even pass 900 last month!], they will probably switch to a digital distribution-only system. I'll join with all gamers in a resounding "Up yours, Sony!" if this happens. Plus, a higher storage capacity makes more options for games. Speaking of high storage capacity...

I really, REALLY hope Sony enables the Memory Stick XC format in the PSP2. In case you haven't heard about it, let me fill you in. Actually, scratch that. A picture is worth a thousand words. This should outline all my reasons: Image
2. FUCKING. TERABYTES.
Yeah, this would be awesome for storage, and for homebrew/backups, when the PSP2 is hacked.

Lastly, this may sound odd, but for its' own good, I hope Sony holds off on making the PSP2 as long as possible, so the most powerful technology feasible can be used in the system. What I really want out of the PSP2 eventually is portable Gamecube and Dreamcast emulation [via an unofficial emulator, of course], and I'm predicting an official PS2 emulator from Sony, much like the PS1 emulator currently used by them on the PS3 and PSP. I know that DC emulation will become somewhat possible with the release of the Pandora, which gives me hope that the PSP2 will push it over the edge into comfortable playing speeds. Oh, and for all you who are skeptical about the PSP2 ever getting hacked, remember this: With a few exceptions that are mostly attributed to personal definitions and interpretations, every single mainstream console that takes unique data mediums [by which I mean not pre-programmed systems like the Odyssey], every single mainstream game console has gotten a method of running homebrew and backups on it at some point. The PS3 doesn't really count, because its life span as a console is not nearly over yet.

Next gen is gonna be fun. :D

Meh. From what I've heard it's going to be an iPhone 4G without the phone capabilities. I'm getting an iPhone 4G as soon as they launch in June/July why would I need a Sony imitation?

That would be a way to make people happy! Sony would never do such a thing. ;)

That and it would kill the PSP god knows I wouldn't have bought one if that was the case.

Well, first of all... I can't imagine a new PSP being released until at least another year yet (May/June 2011). There's still a lot of good/interesting titles coming out for the PSP and they have to try to keep it alive so that it can fit into the so-called "10 Year Playstation Cycle."

It will be very interesting to see what type of media they decide to go with this time. After the failure of the PSPgo, I think it's safe to say that they won't be abandoning physical media any time soon. So I'm thinking maybe they will develop some sort of mini-Bluray disc, or possibly go back to cartridges in the form of Flash media or something.

Being backwards-compatible with PSP1 games would be nice. But to keep the price down, they'd probably be restricted to just the downloaded PSP1 games, not through the disc drive (previously UMD).

A right analog nub or stick is definitely a must. Especially since first and third-person shooting games continue to garner interest and sell well.

I want:
2nd analog nub, good battery life with the option to swap out the battery for another, graphics equal to or better than the Wii, free online play, region free.

Also, the games have to be either:
- physical format (cartridge would be preferred, but optical media is fine too)
or
- digital download with NO DRM and no restrictions on copying/moving/etc. Basically they would work the same way buying mp3s from Amazon works. You can save the file forever, have complete control over it, give it to friends, save it onto various storage formats for backup. It also must easily run on any PSP2 no questions asked. The same must be true for any DLC.

If Sony tries to fuck us over with limited rental DRM bullshit, there is zero chance I will consider buying the PSP2.

Fuck Sony. They are still on my boycott list for removing online features from my PS3, so even if I want to buy their new products, I am unable to.

I hope it's a controller with a screen on it that connects to a PS2 discman that will play all my PS2 games.

No...more...new....consoles, damnit!

I'm so sick of consoles and portables becoming obsolete long before developers even tap their full potential

I really wish this was the last generation of consoles/handhelds but fat chance of that happening

Good question, considering that the PSP is doing very good in Japan only, bad in the rest of the world (almost like the SEGA Saturn!).

While this is going on, DS is a runaway success around the world, with the 3DS ready to be revealed at this year's E3; and iPhone is gathering all casual gamers around the world.

What to do with the PSP2? It should all be about the quality - a good system and with lots of good games. What makes make a good system? While most would ask for a second analog stick, how many games would utilize a 2nd analog stick? I do think 3DS will continue with control layout of the DS - no analog sticks - as in if it works, why fix it? I am leaning that the PSP2 will have a touch screen, since DS and iPhone already have, and most likely no 2nd analog.

Battery life is also a problem for PSP, granted it is longer than the SEGA GameGear, but falls short to the DS (3DS could be aiming around 10hrs of gameplay at highest setting). I do think Sony should try to achieve at least 5hrs of gameplay at highest setting (Wi-fi on, brightest output...). And should the battery be interchangeable? Yes, for the gamers; but not for Sony, as we all know the Pandora battery hack - leave it for Sony to decide carefully.

Graphics, it should be superior to ALL handhelds! Should be able to match up to the PS2 with its own graphic processor, and maybe use software emulation to match up to PS3. Storage, I say start with 20~ 30GB internal hard drive, we're getting ready for the future, with the option of external memory card - which format? Let Sony decide carefully.

The hot topic, game media! I personally think download-only games are the future, but I say that's at least 10 years away. UMD, let's say Sony screwed up big time with the movie releases, but otherwise it worked out fine for games; that said and with the failure of PSPGo (is that ever salvageable?), the PSP2 MUST at least have some way for backwards compatibility. I'm thinking a UMD game title transfer won't happen, since its already too late (and won't be able to save the PSPGo even if it happens now). I am think of an external UMD drive from the beginning to compliment the PSP2.

DRM's, I know they are nasty, but it will stay as game companies want to maximize profits. How many of us are going to dare to stop playing any videogames that we loved? I think Sony will let publishers decide on their own.

Games, if there is a good thing about the PSP, that is the lack of shovel-ware when compared to the DS. Man, I don't know how many times that I talked to parents to avoid crappy licensed games on the DS and Wii whenever I go shopping. There is no shortage of quality games on the PSP, but I think there is room for more. It does start with development kit that Sony sells to potential developers, I say for 1st-timers, Sony should just offer a discount to easy the transition. And if the game sells good (say passing 500-K) or is good (say having a Metacritic score of 75 and above), the developer gets extra credit from Sony, such as reduced costs and better promotion.

The final draw, PRICING! The PSP2 should be priced competitively against the 3DS and iPhone. My hunch (hopefully I am right on this!) is the 3DS will go for around USD $175, no higher than $200 - its job is to fully replace the DSi and set the new standard for all. Sony should learn its hard lessons with the PSPGo, and will have to react to what Nintendo has to offer, so I think the price should be just around USD $200.

I know this is long, and I maybe dead wrong on things, but these are just some of my thoughts.
