Gabe doesn't like the PS3. I like the PS3, but I don't like Sony, so logically, I should like Gabe. But I'm not fond of Gabe. /confused
Basically the PS3 has a cell chip and a Nividia graphics chip, as Sony no longer own the Cell and Ken Kutaragi is no longer in charge of hardware development the PS4 is very likely to become a cut down PC like the 360 is, this keeps development costs down and encourages PC developers like valve to develop for you.
Also Nvidia have been playing catch up to ATI lately so the sensible option would be to go for an ATI card. Therefore the PS4 is unlikely to bear much resemblance to the PS3 meaning learning the PS3's strange architecture in the hope that the experience will carry over to the PS4 is pretty much a no goer.
Also if this is the case, it means you have no chance with Backward Compatability with the PS4.
If this user comment is right old Gabe might have a point after all.

Another Tangent, sorry.
I think it rings true to me the phrase "Open Platform" of the Mac. Seems not having to deal with all the different video, motherboard and sound hardware of the PC would be less headaches. Okay this is a very Retro comparison, I suspect this is why my old 500mhz iMac runs so much better then similar ancient 550mhz AT PC setup.
Same principle on the individual console, may be difficult to code but just one specific hardware collection to tailor the game to without having to worry about the juggernaut of different hardware as in that PC. Really don't see what the beef is about, but then again I'm not a coder.

Re: Newell vs PS3: Round 3
I understand the argument but in my opinion PS3 has better exclusives and is a better entertainment piece. Paired with it's free online play, the PS3 blows the 360 away.
The majority, if not all, of valve's games should be played on a pc anyway...so WHO CARES!?

Ken Kutaragi has already made models for PS4, 5, and 6. He said it a couple of years ago.

Kutaragi is no fortune teller though.benderx wrote:Ken Kutaragi has already made models for PS4, 5, and 6. He said it a couple of years ago.

Re: Newell vs PS3: Round 3
If this is the reason he is so reluctant to go with the PS3, then I would like him to say it. Clearly.
I like the PS3 and I like Valve. It would be nice to have both in one package, but I'm not going to lose a ton of sleep over it. However, it does vex the hell out of me everytime Newell throws out some verbal diarrhea about why he isn't doing anything with it.
I'd like him to just play it straight with us. "I'm not doing anything on the PS3, because -" and then fully explain why you feel it isn't worth the effort. Thus far, all he's been doing is throwing around ad hominem attacks and making vague metaphors concerning the Gamecube.
I'd also like to know why he hasn't done anything with the Wii. I remember him talking about the Wii pre-release, saying he'd like to do something with it because of its control scheme. On that note, I also wonder what his feelings are about Natal.

Re: Newell vs PS3: Round 3
I think what Gabe is trying to get at is the fact that Sony is very closed with how they handle the PS3 and it's future, they are notorious for not disclosing plans for their platform. Plus development on the PS3 is more expensive than PC/360, add in that you only really have to create a game once for Microsoft's platforms since they both support DirectX. Having the game on 360 is literally a matter of changing compilers and then optimising.
Regarding Mac being an open platform. It is an open platform, it doesn't matter whether or not the operating system is closed source or not. Windows is a closed in that regard too. It means that it's an open platform for development. You don't need a licence to produce software for OS X or Windows. You need to have a licence to develop for PS3, as in you have to pay money to Sony should you want to produce a title for that system.

Valve could always outsource the porting process though. I don't know how EA handled the Orange Box but I reckon there would be a fair number of publishers who are more than willing to sink their teeth into Valve's key franchises.

Re: Newell vs PS3: Round 3
but you know.. why bother? He also mentions in the interview that he hasn't yet created a way to distribute hacks/mods over steam. That not having that ability is an oversight that might of come from just not having enough time. Making a PC/XBOX360 game is easy. Making a port for the PS3.... at that point... is it worth it? Not money wise... but as far as what you are willing to put into it and how much time you have. He calls uncharted 2 a great game. A fantastic game. (this goes completely unmentioned in the comments by the way) But he thinks the killer apps of the future are more like world of warcraft and less like uncharted.Pulsar_t wrote:Valve could always outsource the porting process though. Plus, it isn't like he needs the cash. In the interview he says valve expands by 50% a year. So basically you would be taking your game, that you love and giving it to someone else to remake/code so that it'll play on a console that it was never made for.... for what? a couple extra bucks.
Ultimately it is his own company. And there is a ton of research behind this kind of thing. We don't know what valve plans on cooking up in 5 years. Alongside the ps3, he also talks about how valve isn't making portable games. Or ipad games. No one goes fucking crazy at that. Maybe the ps3 is a bad step? I don't know. I'm not running a video game company. I don't know his goals.
What i do know is that gabe isn't shitting on your decision to play a ps3. Nor is he trying to win you over to another 'side'. I know that gabe also does play a ps3. The games come out on the systems they come out on. Buy them or don't! Fucks sake people.
