Help me add to the Sega Saturn 101 post

Post by racketboy »

An update to this page is well overdue:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2007/03/ ... guide.html

I'll plan on adding some sections like acessories and hardware variations, but does anyone have any additional suggestions for additions (to existing or new sections)

Interesting facts, tips, hacks, etc?

A little while ago I discovered that the Saturn took VCD (Video CD) Card Decoders that slide into that slot above the backup battery in the back of the unit, and I actually acquired one from the B/S/T forums! There were different models by different manufacturers, but most of them are pretty obscure and not widely used since the DVD format came out and has become so prevalent.

Here is an article I found that details almost every aspect of the different models of cards out there:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/saturn/916393-saturn/faqs/12540

They are still pretty fun to play with, but again, not very useful to many people anymore. More of a collector's item, and Saturn nerd

Since it did have excellent arcade ports (which is already posted), maybe mention the different arcade pad options (Virtua stick, ASCII, etc). Also, point out that you can use the same stick in a Saturn as a Dreamcast (with an adapter).

Include a section on Action Replay and similar cartridges. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of each one. Tell us which cartridges have extra RAM, which ones have cheat utilities, which ones allow users to play imports, etcetera.

You did a really excellent job of elaborating on the fact that many of the best Saturn games or 'hidden gems' remain Japanese only with your 'Japanese Imports' section on the 'games that defined the Saturn' list, which is what lead to the many methods, mod chips, carts., disc swapping, etc. for playing imports on Saturn.

I would just touch on that a bit more in the imports section of this 101 post, otherwise everything looks great!

A mention of the fact that PAL saturns can only do 50hz without modding the console would be good. Perhaps a list of 50hz only PAL games? I bought a few before I knew I could get 60hz versions from the states/japan which is annoying.

You should make a post on why it is a much better idea to just buy a Japanese Saturn rather than use action replays or putting mod chips. It is more reliable and just cooler. I would rather own the system that will always work instead of fumbling around with 3rd party accessories.

Also maybe you could do a page on how to maintain or make home repairs on dying systems. I suppose the Saturn is as good as any place to start.

Has anyone heard of Wachenroder? It's a pretty unique game for the Saturn and it's one of my favorites. I found the Japanese difficult to understand, but there is a translation available. For me it's one of the defining games for the Saturn.

The Saturn also has the best port of Tactics Ogre due to some excellent exclusive VA.

I was once called an idiot for buying a Japanese saturn instead of a modded saturn. :/
