Three games that popped into my head that were hailed as cutting edge were Donky Kong Country, Starfox and the Megaman X sequels with their spiffy little C4 chip.

Oh, and remember all the fuss over Sonic & Knuckles lock on technology

Oh, and Streets of Rage 2 and Strider on the Genesis. People made such a big deal about how many megs they had
