The Symbols on Beat's Shirt in Jet Grind Radio...

Post by racketboy »

Does anybody have a large, clear sample of them and/or know if there is any japanese significance to them?

The symbols are Be and To, which is about as close as you can get to 'Beat' in Japanese. And the significance is that it's his name, but I think you already know that ...

Can you point out some normal-looking examples of the symbols?

ビート

I believe that's what he has on his shirt. Romanized "Biito"

You have to have Asian Font support installed, BTW.

Yeah, that's a really great link, but I doubt someone who doesn't know Japanese it going to take the time to go through all that.

.gif version of the katakana:

The lower symbols ("ga mu", i.e. Gum) is what's on the woman's shirt.

Short version: katakana is one of the two phonetic alphabets in Japanese. It's usually reserved for "loan words", like words from a different country. Like "Coffee" or "Cake" or "Ice Cream" would usually use katakana.
