Re: Mega Man question
Thanks for the replies guys, glad a nice conversation started out of it. Just for the record I wouldn't say I haven't played enough games I just haven't played anything retro lately so I'm used to newer games where you more or less breeze through in a matter of days. It was about 3pm last night and I decided I wanted to get into another Mega Man game. Just wasn't the right time. I've played plenty of games new and old.

Re: Mega Man question
Eh, I still think Mega Man X is the best of the series. I love X2-X4, but none of them quite matched the first. And this isn't just nostalgia talking. In fact, for most of my life X2 was the only X game I owned (and thus its also the one I know the best). But X had the best music, the best upgrades (X2's helmet was lame, X3's full charge upgrade sucked, X4's float in midair boot upgrade was annoying; I could go on, but overall, aside from maybe the absence of mid-air dash, X's upgrades were just the best designed), the most memorable bosses, etc. The difficultly seemed just right (this was a problem with X2: Sigma was waaaaaaay too easy). I don't know; everything about that game is just nigh-perfect to me. X2 and X3 did a good job of replicating it, but didn't quite match it. X4 did an awesome job reinventing the series, but the new engine suffered from having much stiffer controls, and the game featured terrible voice acting and lame anime cutscenes. Also the music is X4 was much less memorable. Mega Man X5 just fucking sucked in every way, and X6, while a bit better, was still lame as hell. I haven't played X7 or X8 (I plan on buying them soon just to try 'em out), but I assume they won't be very good.Gamerforlife wrote:MMX is classic, but it was outdone in every way by MMX 2 and 3. I especially love using Zero in MMX 3. It's really the only game in the series that lets you use his buster gun at full power. MMX4 is the best in the series though. It completely changed the series with new graphics, cd quality music, anime, more story elements and two playable characters with completely different styles and different story modes. After ripping people apart with melee combos using a light sabre in MMX4 with Zero, I never wanted to play as X again. And if you think using the shoryuken in MMX is cool, nothing is cooler than going mana y mano with the Ken/Ryu inspired Magma Dragoon in melee combat using Zero in MMX 4. Course you could cheese him by bringing the ride armor into the fight, but that's less epic. Oh, that's one more awesome thing about MMX4. I think it was the only MMX game that let you use a ride armor against a boss, which says something about how badass that Ken/Ryu clone was.

Well, you do have to consider that MM2 was only their second outing with the series, while MM9 isn't just their ninth, they've released dozens in the overall series.alienjesus wrote:Its probably controversial of me to say, but Megaman 9 is easily my favourite megaman. I played 2 on VC, and it was ok I guess, but I didn't understand all the hype. Maybe because i had to endure it in 50hz, it just felt sluggish, and the metal blade made the game boring once you got it. In 9, it felt like all the weapons were genuinely useful even outside of boss fights, whereas i didn't get that impression from megaman 2 at all. Also, the boss that someone posted a picture of is unfairly cheap, and incredibly boring. Running out of crash bombs and having to grind for power ups on the sniper joes and mechs outside the room was not fun at all.
And I actually find Air Man to be one of the easiest bosses in that game...

Re: Mega Man question
I agree with and disagree with you on some things. I never had a problem with the controls on MMX 4, in fact I loved killing the bosses with just default Zero with no upgrades and without exploiting weapon weaknesses and it took some speed, skill and reflexes for some of the bosses when fighting them that way. But the english voice dubbing was indeed crap. I like my japanese Rockman X 4 on my Saturn. I actually thought Megaman X 5 was much better than Megaman X 6, which I consider the worst game in the series.KillemallCFH wrote:Eh, I still think Mega Man X is the best of the series. As for MMX 7 and 8, a lot of fans didn't like MMX7 as it tried to fuse the classic 2-d gameplay with 3-d gameplay and it made the game a bit awkward. Megaman X8 is generally considered a good, solid entry that makes up for X6 and X7's mistakes. Still not as good as the best ones in the series though
Back on topic, I agree with Ack. I always started with Air Man in Megaman 2. I thought he was the easiest.Ack wrote: And I actually find Air Man to be one of the easiest bosses in that game...

Re: Mega Man question
That's true, but it doesn't seem to be something people normally consider, they just genuinely think 2 is better. Maybe it's because I didn't play it back in the day, i don't have any nostalgia goggles for it.Ack wrote:Well, you do have to consider that MM2 was only their second outing with the series, while MM9 isn't just their ninth, they've released dozens in the overall series.alienjesus wrote:Its probably controversial of me to say, but Megaman 9 is easily my favourite megaman. Also, i dont know if the Air Man thing was directed at me, but if it was, i didnt mean him, I meant the things on the walls which are the boss in one of the wily levels, where you absolutely NEED to get crash bombs to kill them. I don't know what they're called though.
Re: Mega Man question
I happen to be an unfortunate owner of Mega Man X7. I thought "Five dollars isn't bad at all for a Mega Man game!" when I saw it for sale in a Gamestop bargain bin. But I can not stand this game.
First, I'll admit, I've never been a big fan of the MMX series. When I played the first, I immediately disliked the enemy design because, frankly, it wasn't Mega Man to me. What were all these animal guys? And where was Wily? But I beat the game eventually and realized it was still a solid title with some Mega Man-esque gameplay, even if it wasn't what I really wanted.
I didn't get to play the X series again for a long time, until finally I spotted X7 in Gamestop. And seeing the five dollar price tag, I figured it was worth picking up.
I hate it. I hate having to save robots to get upgrades, and if they die I apparently lose the chance to get that upgrade forever. I hate the 2D/3D split because I can not get the hang of the perspective changes, causing me to die from constant pit falls that I just can not judge spatially(I dislike platformers too, mainly because of things like this). I hate the new character they gave me to play as, because he's annoying, or at least his voice acting is. It grates my ears. And the bosses and level design just seem so uninspired. Why am I driving on a race track? What's with the spinning cactus? No, I just couldn't take it. I'll go back and pick up X2 and X3 someday for my SNES, but X7 really did not give me a favorable look at the MMX series, and I worry that my impressions of it as a whole have soured because of it.

Well, nostalgia goggles may be part of it, though there are parts of the game that I think are classic. I feel the music in MM2 is the best of the series, though the music stays good overall. I also like that it didn't feature so many of the bells and whistles of later games, like sliding, or Beat. It just felt like too much later on for something that started so simple.alienjesus wrote:That's true, but it doesn't seem to be something people normally consider, they just genuinely think 2 is better. As for that boss...well, you don't NEED crash bombs, it's just tough without them. I've done it, but it is pretty rough.

The reploid saving thing is an unfortunate carryover from Megaman X6, which I always tell people was the worst entry in the series. If the new character you are speakin of is Axel, yeah he is lame. Keep in mind the series creator was no longer on board after Megaman X 5. As a result, we got the half assed, rushed Megaman X 6, the awkward Megaman X7 and a crappy new character named Axel. MMX 8 was decent though, despite still having Axel in it
I'd say if you liked Megaman X1, you'll like Megaman X2 as it didn't stray too far from the original's formula. They just threw in some optional bosses, an alternate storyline depending on whether or not you beat them all(which could lead to one more optional boss who is just so badass it's not funny) and some snazzy new C4 chip polygon graphics that are utilized in two parts of the game. Megaman X2 was another one of those games trying to show off what the Super Nintendo was capable of with that new chip they put in the cart, much in the same way Starfox and Donkey Kong Country were trying to redefine what the Super Nintendo was capable of graphicly
Megman X 3 is best played last. It's a bit more complex than X1 and 2 and arguably harder. MMX 3 is where they really tried to add a lot of new stuff and it feels like they upped the overall difficulty just a bit too. Definiitely play it on the Super Nintendo though. There are other versions of MMX 3 on PC,Saturn and Playstation that have horrible remixed music.

Huh? One of the gun turrets is behind a wall that, as far as I could ever tell, can ONLY be destroyed by the crash bomb. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.
