YLOD isn't irrepairable.

Aside from that I think you're way overestimating the prevalence of YLOD.

This means that Sony can and will remove the blu-ray movie playing capability of the PS3 should an attack arise that utilises an exploit in the blu ray software.
I agree with you that Sony can, but I don't think they will. Blu-Ray is the PS3's gimmick. I could be wrong, Blu-Ray is making a stronger presence in the marketplace (Wal-Mart's devoting more shelf space to Blu-Ray).

Not to mention that if they were to somehow remove or deactivate Blu-Ray they'd probably have to remove the ability to play the games themselves!

I think what Niode (correct me if I'm wrong) is implying that the movie won't play if you stick it in the PS3, not Sony somehow borking the BD-ROM drive.

Yes, this is what I mean, they could just remove the 'video' option from the PS3.

Well, we haven't heard from GeoHot in over a month; is he even releasing a CFW anymore? He would have to modify 3.30, but he should at least tell us that he's still doing something! I'm getting very impatient to play my PS3 online again; it's been way too long. Should I just update and get it over with? There's a modchip for the PS3 that lets you downgrade your firmware, so if I ever really want it back, I'll just get that.

Apparently you are much more patient than myself. This upcoming Tuesday is the release of Red Dead Redemption, and there is no way in HELL that I would miss out playing it online.

Yep I've got copies of God of War Collection and Yakuza 3 that are really taunting me. I just don't know whether or not to update, make do without the OtherOS and hope that the lawsuit forces Sony to reinstate the feature. Or just be patient. My PS3 is essentially a glorified DVR.
