My advice:

save $100 or so in advance for a pre-modded one if you're in it for playing and not collecting. I regret not doing that.

What does a modded one exactly do? I've never had any type of system "modified". All I've ever done is cut the tabs out of my N64 to play Japanese games.

If it all it does is allow you to play bootlegs then I wouldn't be interested anyway. I only play legitimate copies. If it does other interesting things then I would love to know. Thanks!

I definately recommend getting the action replay 4in1.. one of the beat things i did for my Saturn. It opened up the possibility of importing titles cheap and backing up my saved games for when my system battery dies.. which will happen.

I bought the Saturn, as I said and it came with 2 model 1 controllers and the battery was dead. I've replaced the battery. Costs $4 dollars and was extremely easy. I replaced 1 of the model 1 controllers with a model 2. It definitely is much better.

I have about 5 or 6 local game stores that are always reliable for my retro gaming needs. All of them have combined maybe 20 Saturn games total (with quite a few duplicates, maybe 10 different games)!! No accessories! Is this system that hard to find stuff for?

I've looked on Ebay and almost everything for the Saturn is BIN. I'm only looking for the common titles. This is crazy! Any recommendations on where to look?

If you are going to buy an action replay cart a lot of the games are cheaper if you buy imports, the game doesn't even have to be rare. That is the way it is in the UK anyway. Good luck!

Okay, here's the thing with the Sega Saturn, man. You're saying that you don't want to mod it, and I certainly understand why a person would have their reasons to want to play the real thing games -- we won't even get into that. But you're also saying that you don't want to get into imports and you only really care about getting into the cheaper titles -- if that's the case, I just don't think that the Saturn is right for you. I mean, let me put it this way -- most all of the cheap-o US titles on the Saturn have simply been bested in recent years -- there are some completely unique titles that have no real contemporary, but they're expensive -- I doubt you'll be willing to pay the prices for Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Guardian Heroes, Shining Force III, Burning Rangers, and Saturn Bomberman, but without those, and restricting yourself to just US titles it is slim-pickin's, my friend.

If you're DEAD-SET on it though, I recommend this article:

You mentioned you are not familiar with Sega. So my recommendation is the Dreamcast. Inexpensive and really great games. Wide variety to keep you happy. Then there are all the EMUs and Hombrews.

EDIT:
Oop just re-read first page, you already bought a Saturn. Well you can always buy the Dreamcast too if you want.

Nights into Dreams is one of the best games to get for your Saturn. Unfortunate for me no Dreamcast version, eventually I'll have to get the PS2 import.

Hey thanks for reviving this thread! I thought it was dead and I am definitely not done learning about the Saturn.

I have noticed the imports are cheaper than the US versions. I would assume they have Japanese menus and writing throughout the games?

@Original_Name Thanks for your input on that... and I must say I completely agree with what you've said. I got the Saturn because I had one when I was younger (surprised me with it instead of the PS I asked for) and I really enjoyed playing a few games. I didn't get it for nostalgia only, because I want to play games I missed out on. Namely I want Sonic 3D blast and the arcade games that were ported. So maybe a total of 10 games I really want and quite a few I want to test out. Like you said, these games are very expensive. I did not realize how expensive Saturn items were. With that said, I'm not opposed to modding my system to play imports (as those are legitimate copies) but I'm skeptical of the language barrier? Is the language thing a problem? I have played Japanese games on my N64 and it is a huge hassle and I do not enjoy it nearly as much.

@ CRTGAMER I actually do have a Dreamcast. It is the only system I own (out of about 8 or so) that is completely boxed up in the closet and never gets played. I just never got around to playing it when it was released or anytime since then. I hear great things about it, but like I said I'm not familiar with Sega at all. The only character I know is Sonic. So I don't know what games to try out for it. I never knew what exclusives it offered. I would love for it to get some use!

Thanks a ton everyone for helping me out! Everyone else feel free to teach me SEGA!

Amazing variety on the Dreamcast, shame to collect cobwebs in that closet. Hit the Dreamcast Topics in the blue bar above for further reads and exclusives. Dude, break that Dreamcast out, at least Sega departed with a bang, a great last console.

One exclusive "Hidden Gem" comes to mind is Toy Commander a shunned off great title. Physics are very good be it flying, driving or running on foot.

Also enjoy Alien Front, Wild Metal and all the EMUs. Dreamcast games are inexpensive used.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised, which games if any on the Dreamcast do you own?

Alright I went and dragged the Dreamcast out of the closet to see what games I had. I must say I am  to show this list. This was a "family" system that never got played and it just kind of ended up in my possession. I have:

Rippin' Riders
Ms. Pac-Man: Maze Madness
Crazy Taxi (of course)
Sega SmashPack Volume 1
Silent Scope
Sega Rally Championship
Centipede
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
Jeremy McGrath Supercross 2000

I will look into getting that Toy Commander game. Seems like my style of game. I really want to play the Sonic Adventure games. Any good? Also I need Soul Calibur after I just bought Soul Calibur II on for my GC and am addicted. Does the DC offer any platformers?

Also what platformers are there for the Saturn?

I feel stupid but what is an EMU?
