Re: PS3 owner sues Sony over removal of "Install Other OS" featu

The accurate answer is no one. The correct answer is Sony -advertised- this as a feature. One that it's competition did not have. Then they arbitrarily took it away from people who already paid full price for it's product. It is never acceptable to remove a feature of -any product- that people have already purchased from you without compensation.

Actually the accurate answer would be a lot more than you think.

I don't care enough to look into it. but I'm fairly certain that in the small print on pretty much every console the manufacturer reserves the right to pretty change anything they want.

I'm a fan of Linux and Yellowdog Linux ran pretty well on the PS3. I was getting ready to install it on my slim and my brother in law came over to install it on his 80Gb Fatty. We were a week too late because we had both done the latest update and the feature was gone.

I was pretty bummed out to say the least since I had planned on doing this for a while.

If I were back in hs/college and had lots of time, I would have used it. It was a shitty thing to remove it. I hope they lose.

You couldn't put it on the Slim anyway. They never had the 'Other OS' option.

I use the Other OS on my PS3 quite a lot. It's a very useful feature for emulation. Being able to just to go a menu and boot straight into a frontend and access all my emulators and roms is very useful. I use the ZeroGame Project, which customises a standard Yellow Dog Linux install into a Maximus Arcade style frontend for emulators. The best thing is the wireless bluetooth controller support. Yes, I could quite easily build a HTPC that does the same thing but that would cost money even more money.

I hope this lawsuit highlights that the customer still has rights over the hardware they buy. It will be a very sad day when hardware vendors can do whatever they want with hardware you have paid for.

i see it useless too
but maybe it has to do with that thing we heard about, a hacker made the ps3 run pirated games

any way, if you advertise something you better keep it thats the deal right?
Sony at least must have made this a choice, u either keep it and u dont have enough privacy or take it away and stay up to date

Except that didn't happen at all.

Only thing GeoHot did was find a way to enable OtherOS to have full access to the ps3's hardware, so linux on it could be used to its full potential.

Teamhades have (going on a translation of jaicrab.blogspot.com) been dumping the ram at various points of the XMB to get a better idea of the makeup of the security of the PS3. They appear to have found an exploit in the blu ray player of the PS3. It sounds like we could have a point of entry similar to that found on the PS2. That too was exploited through it's multimedia capability (IE DVD player software).

Now, here's main point of this post. If Sony can remove the OtherOS feature with little to no recourse over their actions (I still haven't had a response from Sony or Argos over a refund) and the class action lawsuit a long time from receiving a verdict. This means that Sony can and will remove the blu-ray movie playing capability of the PS3 should an attack arise that utilises an exploit in the blu ray software.

This is why it's imperative that we band together to show that Sony cannot remove features from hardware. Sony have benefited from the apathy over OtherOS, people simply did not care that it was removed because it wasn't used by the majority. Bluray playing on the other hand is definitely used by most people who own a PS3. Is it still acceptable for them to potentially remove it?

Niode with YLOD limited milage hanging what do you think about limiting PS3 to just PS3 games, a concern?
