Isn't there some kind of incompatibility between Japanese games and other region memory cards?

No. I have Japanese, PAL & US saves all on the same Memory Cards with no problems. Some games will even read the same save file (i.e. Japanese & US versions of the same game, note: most games have separate save files depending on region).

Supposedly the Gamecube would only set one country code per memory card. Although I have had luck with Japanese Loderunner and U.S. games on the same card.

PS2 has both PAL and NTSC of the game ICO with exact same Name-Icon on one memory card. Can't tell apart other then save date between them. Individual ICO games will only recognize their own saves.

I too have Japanese and US saves on my card.

I concur that the card had probably taken a dump. Hopefully a copy and format will cure it. might test with some lesser games that just save settings and scores a few times before trusting it to put back the other saves and use it.

What brand is the card? Might help if we can tell if it's a less reliable 3rd party one.

That's probably where I got that from.

On the gamecube, each save has a gameID that is tied to the particular game/region. I suspect that the PS2 has something similar. Here are some sample PS2 game IDs.

SLUS_203.12
SLES_543.58

SLUS is US, SLES is Europe or Spain.

Just for further insight, SCUS is a Sony Computer 1st party game and SLUS is a 3rd party licensed one. All of my import Japanese games are SLPM. I wonder how PM ties to Japan.

Official Sony product. I don't mess with third party memory cards. There's nothing like losing a 40 hour save on an RPG to make you want to give up your hobby and do something useful with your life. And who wants that?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
