Microsoft owns Halo, so no ports. I think the reason they did this is because Bungie didn't want to be halo-bitch forever.

Oh boy! Maybe now we'll get a sequel to one of the most mediocre third person action titles ever made: Oni. Ironically, it's the only Bungie game I ever mildly enjoyed. Look at this pathetic track record:

Bungie as a company does not deserve all this attention they're getting.

I didn't care much for Oni at all. Perhaps if they'd left in the multiplayer component then I would have enjoyed it more, but the singleplayer was just a 3d beat 'em up with a somewhat interesting combat system mixed with atrocious level design and laughably bad storytelling. A fairly big leap down in quality from what they did in Marathon and Myth.

Marathon hasn't aged terribly well, but at the time that the games came out, they were fan-fucking-tastic. I didn't find the storytelling or gameplay to be quite as engrossing as System Shock, but for something so action-oriented as Marathon, it was tits. Too bad we only got the second game on Windows back when it came out. It's a shame that there's not streamlined Aleph One setups made available on the official site so that people wouldn't have to dick around with downloading bits and pieces to attempt to play the games. It also doesn't help that Aleph One had crummy documentation and wonky mouse input.

Myth, on the other hand, still fucking rocks. It made RTS fun for me again by adding the strategy to the acronym instead of "Real Time Resource Hoarding". Third game is incredibly lackluster, but it was from a different dev studio and even they've admitted that it never really came together.

I'm really looking forward to what they put out now that they're not bound to continue working on Halo games. Being stuck working on a single franchise for nearly a decade has got to be pretty draining. I'd like to think that they'll be able to avoid another Halo 2-like problem by splitting, but after Oni...who knows? Maybe they'll do some completely off the wall shit like Wideload did when they whipped out Stubbs the Zombie.

A lot of people liked Marathon...
But yes, they are overated.

No one can ever name one damn reason why it's worth playing, other than it being "the spiritual predecessor to Halo.

You mean other than exceptionally well done storytelling and advanced level design for its time? Granted, it's no System Shock (released the same year) in regards to gameplay depth, but System Shock's control scheme is fairly clunky and it's more of an RPG hybrid along the lines of Deus Ex anyway. There's just as much point to playing Marathon as there is to playing any game that's considered a milestone for a genre and there's just as many drawbacks as there are for any older game.

Whether or not it's worth playing is determined by whether or not you'd be interested in playing an FPS that's 13+ years old, really. Most people aren't, they'd rather just praise or slam 'em based on a couple of screenshots and a few wiki articles.

I always heard of it as being a solid alternative to Doom or Quake (can't remember which)

Doom/Doom II, and it's a good bit more advanced than either.
