DMC4, LP2, Dark Void, RE5, Bionic Commando.. It seems much of Capcom's output has become averageville. Do they even develop anything original anymore? Some might say SF4 is a modern classic has it really changed much to a two decade formula?
I somehow doubt Dead Rising 2 will receive the same warm reception its predecessor enjoyed.

Re: Has Capcom lost it?
Capcom started going down hill when they sacked Clover studio.
Oh well, Sega was smart enough to pick them up and they're now known as Platinum Games and have an impressive track record. Already.

I think Lost Planet 2 is going to surpass the first, but really I think they've slipped since the good old days. And letting Clover go was a huge mistake.

they are still making some good games on the Wii and DS and the digital distribution platforms.

Yeah, those games you just listed were kind of 'meh' but you're leaving out some really GOOD games that Capcom has released lately, using the time frame of the games you've mentioned yourself.
Megaman 10
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Super Street Fighter IV
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Dark Void Zero
Monster Hunter 3
Dark Side Chronicles
And the list does go on. Capcom is doing just fine. Any problems people are having with their 'AAA' titles (how I hate that stupid term) are the same problems every company is having with their own multi million dollar 3rd person adventure game lately: Too much hype.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

and over saturation of the genre imo. How many breakthroughs in game design, in a single genre with the same controller, can there be in a 5 year period?

It is true that a lot of their output has been sequels lately, but that's true of gaming companies in general. Last gen, Capcom developed a lot of original IPs, but they mostly tanked- Chaos Legion, Urban Reign, Crimson Tears, God Hand... even Okami, which is revered in retrospect, didn't sell quite as well as it should have upon release. It really is a shame that Clover got shut down though- everything they made was gold in my book. I admired Capcom for releasing so many new titles back then even if some of them were not very good. With the exception of Dark Void, there has been less of that this gen. What Capcom has been doing really well at now is retro-revival games. Both the kind with updated graphics (Street Fighter IV, Bionic Commando: Rearmed) and the kind that pay homage to the days of sprites (Megaman 10, Dark Void Zero). They have made a few missteps, but Capcom is still a gaming company I hold in high regard.

I loved SF4 and SSF4 there my favorite in the series second only to 3rd strike.Pulsar_t wrote:DMC4, LP2, Dark Void, RE5, Bionic Commando.. It seems much of Capcom's output has become averageville. The problem here is that your comparing games like DMC4 and RE5 to there predecessors (DMC3 and RE4) games that were incredible and were at there absolute peak and will probably never be topped. Comparing RE4 to RE5 just isn't fair there to similar. RE5 is RE4 HD remix with a new story and a decent co-op gimmick. I was really hoping for another tank controlling RE game but we will probably never see that again thanks to RE4. Dont get me wrong here I loved RE4 but it killed the series for me. DMC however thats a lost cause not much they can do since the creator of the game is making bayonetta. I think Capcoms strong suit right now is digital distribution.

Re: Has Capcom lost it?
Capcom has made some pretty significant boners in the last year, but that said, they've made less than many other companies. They've had some huge misses, but the few games that were really amazing are enough to keep me supporting them.
Re: Has Capcom lost it?
And nothing wrong with a sequel if it's a good sequel. If they do enough to evolve the game then I have no problem giving them my cash for it. If it's just more of the exact same then I may put the brakes on.J T wrote:I was going to say something like this.Flake wrote:Yeah, those games you just listed were kind of 'meh' but you're leaving out some really GOOD games that Capcom has released lately, using the time frame of the games you've mentioned yourself.
