Crusader: No Joy!

Post by Pulsar_t »

Anyone else here has either of the Crusader games? I have had the No Regret CD-RM for nearly 15 years now but never got used to the controls. I mean the mouse is clunky, and I never got used to the numpad. Gamepad support is quite limited as well. Perhaps the PS/SAT port is still worth playing? HardcoreGamer says the controls are iffy on consoles but I can't stand the numpad. (my cousin used to beat me at MK2/3 using the numpad.. Heh)

When I was shopping around for Saturn games I was immediately attracted to the cover. It looks awesome with that menacing red storm trooper looking guy. But when I saw the screen shots, I was kind of turned off. I guess I should give it a try.

I love the two Crusader games. I wish the third had come out. I never had much of a problem with the tank controls. I've played the Saturn version and its a good port. The PC looks way better though. I don't think the console version is going to help much control wise though.

Give these games a shot! They are well worth your time. There are some big hurdles with controls but once you get a hang of them it's a really fun game. Killing random bad guys and searching their bodies for keycards and credits is so much fun. And the death animations from various weapons are "to die for". I used a Gravis gamepad back in the 90s with a Windows 95 PC running the games in DOS. I can't imagine not using a gamepad and haven't played the games since that time period.

The biggest draw to these games is the atmosphere. I love the Sci-Fi genre and this is like the ultimate Sci-Fi adventure game in 3/4 view. I would recommend starting with No Remorse then moving on to No Regret. The story is a lot of fun. The thing that takes these games to the next level are the cut-scenes with live actors playing in game characters. You meet them, help them, learn from them, buy weapons from them, and just play fall in love with how cheesy and funny they are.

Controls are the only hurdle, get a gamepad and have at it. Save often and reload those last saves when you get your ass handed to you by exploding drums or mech turrets.

I just picked it up for my saturn, and haven't gotten the chance to try it yet...

I guess I'll know what I'm doing tomorrow afternoon!

I didn't mean to say the games weren't good, in fact I like everything about them beside the tank controls  I also like the MOD music.

Doesn't the DOS game only support two gamepad buttons? Meaning that the keyboard must be used in tandem with the pad. Does it look better on Sat or PS? Strangely despite the Sat's powerful 2D capabilities some ports look worse on it (Castlevania SotN is one example)

From the review it seems he doesn't have difficulty controlling the character. I guess that settles it, then.

The gamepad I had was a 4 button bare bones Gravis gamepad. It was like a cheap SNES knock-off design with R, B, Y, G buttons instead of the A, B, X, Y. I can't remember if each button had a function or if it was only two that did. I do recall using double buttons for certain things, like laying a spider mine I suppose - which is really awesome to do. You crouch beside a corner and drive it down the hall into the next room and BOOM. But anyway, yes you need to use the keyboard for certain commands. It's not that bad though. I think you need it for using med-kits and energy cubes and of course for quick saving. I suppose it reminds me of Diablo in that way... haven't played the sequel or any other incarnations of that game. Do remember cheat duping on lagged connections online though :)
I never played the other versions and can only say the PC version was pretty boss. The PS one looked pretty crappy in screenshots.

I remember the Gravis gamepad haha. Anyway, I went with Xpadder and mapped most of the controls to my DS-style Thrustmaster gamepad. Turns out there's absolute screen movement but it's useless since aiming can be tricky.
