When I was a kid I loved arcades. I didn't have any money to play but the shiny lights, loud noises, and asshole bigger kids made the arcade magical. Now they are dead and I want nothing more than for the arcade to return.
Is it even possible?
What would you do to revive the arcade?
What would you do to revive the arcade?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
I love(d) the arcades, there are still active ones (well 2) in my city, one has heaps of old Capcom / SNK games, its a blast, they cost quite a lot to play these days, but I highly doubt the scene will ever rise again.
People use to love the arcades because it was a showcase of the greatest games at the time, games you couldn't play at home, and console versions were watered down and no where near the arcade counter parts.
People also love depth in there games, upgrades, unlockables, etc, something that the arcade just cant provide.
Lastly, the internet has made playing with people all over the world all too easy.
The arcade scene was awesome, but it will never make a comeback.

Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
For reasons already stated, it would be rather difficult to bring back the arcade in any major way. I wouldn't say it is impossible though.
The one thing the arcade provides that consoles don't is in person competition with both friends and strangers. Yes, there is online multiplayer, but it is not the same as going head-to-head in person.
Arcade games also need to play to their strengths. The have to be fast, furious, and addictive because you need a person who only plays for 5 minutes to have a good time just as much as the person that plays for 3 hours. Many modern games on consoles don't allow for that since they require like 60 minutes of tutorial before you even start your first fetch quest.
Perhaps a different system would be good too, like if there was a way to insentivize playing the games beyond the games just being fun. For example, if you could make it so that a certain amount of progress in the game would give you more tokens or something, or perhaps the games have built in tournament abilities or something like that.

Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
There is actually 2 arcade cabinets in front of me if I had X-Ray glasses of course. Its Marvel Vs. Capcom, and a Neo-Geo cabinet with King fighters 200x (i forgot which version), puzzle bobble game, soccer game, and metal slug X. Before there was Killer Instinct, pinball machine, and etc. This is located across a small laundry market. a block away behind my house is Arcade repair shop that seems to be full old arcade games that are in complete dust. I saw the Virtua Fighter cabinet and some other classic games. I don't even if they are still in bussiness. Looks as if were storage location. But I mame on my imac to get those old classic games. I'm planning to make my mame cabinet someday when I have money and a large room.
few blocks away from my home I can find Xmen vs street fighter cab, another Marvel vs Capcom, Neo geo. I remember playing street fighter 2 (without turbo version) for first time a taco restaurant. Guile kick my ass easily and at the time the character look huge on the tv screen. Shakey's Pizza (early 1990s) had the orginal Neo-geo arcade cabinets and The simpsons and Ninja turtles 2 arcade.
Today they should put games like classic compilation, pinball machines, japanese arcade cabinets, Guitar Freaks, Final fight double Impact. I'm still waiting for Namco to release Pacman champion edition to nintendo wii and PS3?
Actually NAMCO is going to release a new Pac-Man arcade up to for players.

Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
I say make them cheaper. Or at least once you die the cost to buy more lives is drastically reduced. I love arcades but in order to walk into one and straight-up play to my satisfaction i would have to spend at least $50 and i just can't see myself doing that. The games, to me, just aren't addicting enough.

Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
There is no logic for it,
-Its very very expensive compared to a $60 game that you can play to death(not to mention if you buy it when the price goes lower say $30)
-Money you pay goes away, at least you can sell the games you purchased , you can't sell the time you played with in the arcades.
-Systems are too powerful right now, I can't imagine more powerful machines will give you better game experience, graphics wise.
-In this busy world, who has time to drive to a place every few days just to get videogames fix
But if it might be possible I have to say you got two options:
1) You make into something like a videogames club. You go there and you start an account, and on every machine you log in, and each machine saves your score and where you left the game with. These games can be new types of games where you need four players to play (or something of the sort) and they are really really long where it takes months to complete a game.
Then you have some kind of a cafe or a restaurant .
I don't know if it is exactly arcades , but its a videogames club where you can hang out with your friends , play games, and eat. The place basically will be making money out of food/beverages sales. Maybe videogame club members get specially discounts on consoles or retail games, or movies dvds.
2) You create videogames that are playable only on large machines. Like a car model where you hop in and compete with others and it must me something like a simulatioin. I am aware that similar things exist, but its not good enough, they should create something that mimics the real thing. Maybe you can enter a mechwarrior kind of thing and start a war with your friends.
The whole idea is to create videogames that are available on large machines that are expensive to buy and inconvenient to store at home.
They can turn this into a sport/competition with weekly prizes for the winner.
I am sure thats better than a 360 controller.

Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
I think the right kind of arcade could work, but arcade games now rely to heavily on gimmicks. I think a good selection of Shumps, Vs. Fighters and Brawlers would still garner interest A retro arcade if you like, keep the prices retro too 30-50p a credit and I think it could be workable.
Re: What would you do to revive the arcade?
Yeah theres a place in the city near me thats like a gamers club, naturally there was a monthly fee for being a member. Cant remember the name of the place atm.
They had some brand new japenese arcade machines and about 100 360s and some gaming PCs. There have a bar and cafe and they regularly hold tournaments. The whole place looked very sleek, so it didnt feel like the traditionaly grimey arcades that I remeber but I think if they are to make a comeback then this is the form that they would take.
