Whoa whoa whoa, the 1985 one? I don't know what you're talking about, that thing is a work of art.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Saw the original Vampire Hunter D other day, it was beyond laughably bad.

It's one of those movies that's just so weird. Mecha horses and laser cannons, yet it's like the 1500's? Confusion abounds.
Then again mecha horses and laser cannons are the symbols of the greatest works of art.....

I always figured it was set in the far future, like a heavily fantasy-influenced post-apocalyptic movie. But I loved both of the Vampire Hunter D films.

Yeah, it starts getting kind of "out there" when you have vampires terrorizing humanity after nuclear holocaust thousands of years in the future. Partly that gives it that awesome retro 80's anime sort of feel. Another big factor for me is that I appreciate it when things have a crazy over-the-top quality to them, this obviously fitting in.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Hahahaha![]()

I believe that's correct, actually. I think it takes place in like 12,000 AD, again after nuclear holocaust. Either film is quite different from the other, but I find both to be outstanding in their own right.Ack wrote:I always figured it was set in the far future, like a heavily fantasy-influenced post-apocalyptic movie. Gilliam had huge fights with the US studio that released it. They didn't like the length or the downer ending and hacked the shit out of it. There's a Criterion DVD box for it that has the 142 minute Directors's cut, the 94 minute hacked up US version, and a third disc full of the usual making of stuff, plus a 60 minute show about the fight Gilliam had over the movie.Mr.White555 wrote:Brazil. This movie baffled me. The film is obviously very personal to Terry Gilliam, but this ultimately plays against the viewer. Some parts were great and some went on way too long. Overall I guess it was enjoyable.

I know, I didn't think it was too bad really, just trying too hard. But given it's an 80's Anime that's a usual given for a good chunk of stuff from that era.Dylan wrote:Yeah, it starts getting kind of "out there" when you have vampires terrorizing humanity after nuclear holocaust thousands of years in the future. I saw the "director's cut" on the Criterion DVD; the 142 minute one Hobie mentioned. It seemed longer than that though.OldSchool_Boy wrote:Fans say it depends on what version you watch.
