I was briefly watching Step Brothers this afternoon. Man, that is a bad movie. I can't imagine anyone paying good money to see it in the theater or renting the DVD. It has Will Ferrell & John Reilly in it.

I recorded Animal House and I'm looking foward to watching it again for the umpteenth time. That's a classic movie that they don't make anymore.

Well, the problem with movies is that you have to pay admission before you get to see whether a movie is worth watching or not.

Oh yeah, and I saw "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" the other night. I actually really liked it. It had a few problems, and I don't really want to discuss anything about it because pretty much anything would be a spoiler, but it was a lot better than most of the movies I've seen lately.

I'm a big fan of Mad but they failed utterly at the movies whereas National Lampoon had been the exact opposite. Nothing of note has come from them for years however, afaik.

There's Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic for that, but some movies' merits remain questionable (e.g. Juno, Avatar). For example Furry Vengeance's metascore of 23 should be a clear indication that it's to be avoided at all costs.

Yes, that's the problem. My wife and I saw both of these movies in theaters based on hype and really good reviews. Juno was pretty bad, but Avatar managed to exceed all expectations of suckiness, and I wasn't even expecting it to be good.

Meanwhile, "Crank", one of my favorite films ever only has a 60% on the tomatometer.

I do read reviews, but a lot of times niche films get unusually low reviews because reviewers aren't part of the niche.

I do most of my movie viewing through netflix or redbox, though, so if I pick a bad movie I haven't really lost much.

They actually talked about this a little on a recent Benheck.com podcast, or at least related ideas. It doesn't really matter if a movie is good or not if it's marketed correctly. Most people seem to agree that Transformers 2 sucked, but it did great in the theaters because people wanted to see the spectacle.

Just watched Avatar and I thought that it was okay, but there was a ton of exposition and way too many cliches on top of that. Pretty movie though.

Brazil. This movie baffled me. The film is obviously very personal to Terry Gilliam, but this ultimately plays against the viewer. Some parts were great and some went on way too long. Overall I guess it was enjoyable.

Fans say it depends on what version you watch. The European cut is preferred.
