Working at Game Stop

Post by Imperfect Dark »

For those who have worked there and those who do, is it a good idea?

It wasn't a pleasant experience. Expendable employees, low pay, etc, etc. Most coworkers were nice. I'd assume you're fairly young. Just get a job working at a grocery store or something. That job was way more enjoyable than gamestop.

I worked at a grocery store for a couple years and really hated it. It really motivated me to get to college and do soemthing, nay ANYTHING, else with my life.

Whoa now not ALL of the employees are dicks, but yes I have had to deal with some pretty cocky ass holes in the past at GS.

Anyway, I have been working for them for 3 weeks now and Im enjoying it. I have worked plenty of retail jobs and its pretty standard in terms of a retail store. Really it just depends on who you work with, or work under for that matter. Luckily I have been friends with most of the staff from before they worked there and we all get along very well. We dont sticker artwork and all of us refuse to check out anything but USED games, as we think selling opened games as new is ridiculous. As far as im concerned were probably the best run Gamestop that I have seen personally.

Anyway, if you don't mind working retail and are a generally friendly person who likes to help customers you would be fine. Of course some people come in pissed off and you have to deal with that side of things as well. Just remember that its a JOB and you wont be sitting around playing/talking about games all day. I guess the discount doesn't hurt either.

I'm currently working at a GameStop. Aside from not having much of a choice in the matter, it's okay. The employee discount is great, being able to check out used stuff is great (bout to check out GTA:Episodes from Liberty City pretty soon - we got a ton of copies traded in recently), and it's great having a job where you can actually talk to both your co-workers and customers about stuff you love.

The bad stuff is that hours are shit, and there is a pressure to perform (get reservations, get subscriptions, etc). Aside from that, though, it's great.

I'd recommend you get a job at GameStop to supplement another job (or get another job to supplement GS). I'm currently looking for a second job myself, but it's been balls hard. Places close down before I can even return the application.
