i'm certain mr. limewater is less concerned about your COEXIST bumper-sticker feelings on race and homosexuality and more concerned at the espoused air of superiority that comes from that type of comment. when you put it in terms like that, though obvious not exactly the same, it's really not a far cry from "that's what playing video games gets you" or "that's what being black gets you."
my son is probably going to be homeschooled. that's his mother's choice though, she has full custody, but i've done enough research on it that i truly feel like you don't have to be handed hard choice after hard choice and endure years of ridicule at the hands of peers and instructors to become a functional, developed member of society. i truly used to think that homeschooling was ridiculous, and that notion was derived from meeting a lot of dipshit kids that do dumb shit like, say, attack people while pretending to be a ninja. then i remembered that i went to school with at least seven of those types of kids per year growing up.
also, you guys need to take some debate classes or something. i feel like this is like the 2007 republican primary, only there's no ron pauls, only mitt romneys and rudy giulianis.

I'm not the one claiming a causal relationship between homeschooling and having obvious mental health problems. A racist person might claim that being black causes a personality defect, such as a propensity for crime. This is wrong. Your "that's what home schooling gets you" comment is not really much different because there is not a causal relationship between homeschooling and hacking people in the head with a machete.Octopod wrote: The two have absolutely nothing to do with one another but I guess it is convenient to lump stuff like that together when you wish to shut down opposition.
Edit: Should have just edited the last post, sorry about that.

I'm home schooled and I turned out fine. It doesn't matter if that kid was or wasn't he has problems.

Heh. Yes, I was being rather snarky early on. I thought my point was pretty clear in my original post, but this is clearly not the case.aaron wrote: also, you guys need to take some debate classes or something. i feel like this is like the 2007 republican primary, only there's no ron pauls, only mitt romneys and rudy giulianis.

Whatever, I retract my comment. Any response I have will just look like trolling at this point.

I usually am. However, I feel that I often come across as very cold and robotic when discussing anything controversial on this forum.aaron wrote:maybe you'll be more proactive in the future, then.

Bah. Troll away if you wish. I'm not actually emotionally invested in this debate, though I think I quite obviously fall on a particular side of it.Octopod wrote:Whatever, I retract my comment. Any response I have will just look like trolling at this point.
[Full disclosure: I am formerly home-schooled, as are three of my four siblings. I actually know a lot of well-adjusted adults who are formerly home-schooled as well. I know home-schooling has a bad rap, but I really do believe that a large portion of this reputation is undeserved. I think a lot of it comes from home schooling's close association with conservative Christianity, lack of knowledge about the accountability required of home-schoolers, and just the fact that it's "different" and "weird." I did personally encounter what I would consider to be anti-homeschooling prejudice from the school guidance counselor when I went to enroll in public school at the start of tenth grade. It didn't end up actually being that big a deal, but it was pretty annoying to be told that my homeschooling didn't count because they didn't know what I had been doing. They wouldn't have done that if I was transferring from an out-of-state public school.]
@Aaron: Ah, understood. I think it would have been fair to direct it at me as well, though.
