Sony removing OtherOS feature in 3.21 PS3 update

Anybody hear of new successful work-arounds?

Don't think there is one until we get the CFW from geohot. ...

The thing that pisses me off the most about this is the relative ease that geohot has demonstrated in getting this hack to work. He has literally just added the options back into the menu. Which means that the only thing that Sony has done in this 'update' is remove a couple of bytes of information...

Do you think it would be possible to "update" now and later be able to use the CFW to add the "link" back into the system? I'm going crazy not being able to use my PS3!

Thanks. To some extent it helps. I'm sure the system recovery tool will be disabled (or at least this work-around) between now and when CFW is released. Looks like I'll have to hold on for a while longer.

Did you read the second page? One of the posters says that it might not be possible to reinstall the 'tweaked' firmware on a retail PS3.

He's waiting for an infectus modchip so that he can try and get otheros on the Slim. I don't know why he doesn't just release it for just the fat owners though... Plus, of course, he's just got an ipad and is working on jailbreaking that and iPhone OS 4.

Looks like someone filed a class-action lawsuit after all. It'll be interesting to see how Sony responds, and what could be in it for consumers affected by it.

I saw this too. Very very happy to see. I hope Sony is forced to give the feature back, plus pay millions to all of the customers they wrongly affected. Fuck Sony.

Hey, that is taking place in CA. I hope it gets a lot of news exposure, embarrass and pressure Sony to Re-firm other OS capabilities. If not then sue the pants off them.

A PlayStation 3 owner from California has filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony for the removal of the “Install Other OS” feature.

The suit was filed by Anthony Ventura at the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on April 27th. The suit seeks redress for what is describes as Sony’s “intentional disablement of the valuable functionalities originally advertised as available with the Sony Playstation 3 video game console.” The suit also alleges that Sony has breached the sales contract with its customers, and that this amounts to “an unfair and deceptive business practices perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers.”

So far, Sony has apologized to customers for the removal of the feature, but claims that it is a necessary step to prevent piracy. Sony claims that its actions are legal and points disgruntled owners to the EULA (End User License Agreement) which they agreed to the first time they used the games console.

It appears that Amazon in the UK has given one Sony PS3 owner a partial refund for the removal of the feature.

I get the moral problem people have but honestly, who the hell really uses this feature? Its worthless.
