Really? Maybe their dvd won't play because it's not a dvd. It's a blu-ray.
This does bring to light the bs with firmware. If a disc requires firmware to play, it should include the firmware on the disc.
*Edit, they've fixed the article, taking out the term dvd.
Someone has no idea that a dvd isn't a blu-ray disc

No one is confused about dvd/blu-ray....they just have to update their players. It's big brotherish and a bad idea but I think you misunderstood the article. They're watching blu-rays on a blu ray player.Jrecee wrote:http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/movie-t ... h-DVD.html

DRM is a fucking joke. People who will buy the product are going to buy it...people who pirate will pirate.
Companies need to realize that the only ones DRM hinders are the consumers supporting the product.

Good. That movie is a waste of time anyway.
On a more serious note, why should we put up with corporate zealotry? If you don't like their bullshit don't buy their bullshit.

Re: Someone has no idea that a dvd isn't a blu-ray disc
honestly. Firmware updates. For a blu-ray player. Why? My DVD player never needed new firmware. F that. Good thing I have zero interest in Avatar.
Re: Someone has no idea that a dvd isn't a blu-ray disc
BigTinz, they have since changed the article.
Before:
"In reality, the disc works fine; the problem stems from the Blu-ray players themselves. In order to run optimally, the firmware for these fancy DVD machines needs to be updated regularly via a download from the Web."
After:
"In reality, the disc works fine; the problem stems from the Blu-ray players themselves. In order to run optimally, the firmware for these fancy Blu-ray machines needs to be updated regularly via a download from the Web."
They also completely reworded the first paragraph, where they suggested that a Blu-Ray is also a DVD.

Oh, I actually read the article with the original text....but that's just the writers lingo. He's calling a BR player a "fancy" dvd player. It wasn't meant literally.
No biggie, DRM is terrible and player shouldn't have to be online.
If anything...the updates should be contained on the disc, like the psp did a few years back. This is just a way to verify in real time...which makes no fucking sense.

Re: Someone has no idea that a dvd isn't a blu-ray disc
Hopefully they'll have all this bs sorted out by the time I get a bluray player. . . which will probably be a PS3 once the price goes down. A $249 PS3 this holiday along with Iron Man 2 blu-ray sounds nice. . .
I seriously think they're purposely making dvd quality worse to make people buy bluray players. The transfer of Sherlock Holmes was AWFUL. I've never had a transfer take me out of the movie like that. It looked like they rendered it in low res wmv format, transfered it to youtube, then ripped it from youtube, put it onto a cd, then transferred it onto an old batch of blank dvds from 1998 that they found in a wet basement. I returned the movie to wal-mart for another copy and it had the same problem. How the transfer got a 7/10 in the ign review I don't know.

Re: Someone has no idea that a dvd isn't a blu-ray disc
It's idiotic but they have a right to be able to play a Blu-Ray movie if they have a Blu-Ray player without updating or other copy protection crap.
Thanks everyone...

If people are too dumb to not now how to update their blu-ray player, they shouldn't have one.
