What is wrong with us Southeastern site goers?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What is wrong with us Southeastern site goers?

Post by fastbilly1 »

Durkada has 14+ pinball machines and a trove of arcade machines.
Majors has a four slot MVS with about ten games, among other systems games.
And I have a Vs Cocktail and have had a good thirty cabs within the past six years.
Man we are crazy.

Thats all Ive got, a funny thing I thought I would bring to light.

You guys should

1) Get together
2) Start an arcade
3) Host first-ever Racketboy forums meatspace gathering
4) Bask in awesomeness of said retro arcade

1) Sounds good.
2) Sounds bad. I don't want the unwashed masses touching my polished games.
3) Whats a meatspace? Is it related to a sausage fest?
4) Refer to 2.

Actually, I would love to see a retrocade in ATL. Or some sort of retrogaming museum, kinda thang. There is a Georgia Pinball Appreciation Society mailing list, and some bloke said he got some space in Little Five Points for just such an endeavor. Since you probably don't know, Little Five Points was the trendy "bohemian" area of Atlanta before they built a police station there. And somehow, with the police station, its become more violent. Now East Atlanta fills the role.

Seriously, however, my main problem with an open arcade is just the fear that these things would get trashed. I love the idea of an electro/mechanical arcade amusement facility, but doubt the machines would take the kind of abuse from today's crowd.

But, after we get some remodelling done, I do plan on throwing some regular bashes. Any Racketfolk who wants to attend need only drop me a line. So, the 12 pins which are out can be played (five are in storage in an unusable part of the basement), along with the five or so vids.

As per Fastbilly's question -- yeah, I don't know what the fuck is wrong with us. Irresponsible spending, along with an innate pack-rat mentality surely plays a role. But for me, it was all down hill, when, many years ago I saw a totally trashed Funhouse at a roaming event and thought to myself.. "Deh, I wonder how much one of these would cost". At the time, a decent game could be found for around 600 or so bucks -- a true bargain at the time. The home collector hobby/market was a couple years away. Any kid who stepped into an arcade wanted to bring at least one of the machines home with him. 15 or so years later, it became possible.

You won't catch me dead in Georgia... just drive on through, drive on through. I once killed a man just south of Atlanta on I-75.

Naw, just living out our youths, like durk said. And I have three cabs and ~30 PCBs currently.

Since we are plugging con's, I run the video game room at Animazement in Durham, NC. It's always on Memorial Day weekend.

You're telling me women don't LOVE retrogaming? :D

The retrocade where I live seems to get by with very little abuse on its machines. They're all in quite good shape despite lots of traffic, including plenty of kids. I think one of the keys is that they don't serve beer. A lot of retro arcades (OK, I guess there aren't a LOT of them) serve beer because they figure the only people who will come there are dudes aged 25 to 45. But the weird part about this place is there's a ton of college students and kids along with the older people who played the games the first time around. There's even women and girls.
