The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom

Post by J T »

Best $5 I ever spent.

Ok, maybe it's a bit early to say that since it just came out today and I haven't played it for that long, but so far I'm loving this game. It's got humor, it's got style, and it's got character. The game looks like a silent movie and you play a fat little rapscallion that has a terrible sweet tooth for pies. He doesn't seem to care if the world has to collapse around him in his quest to steel every pie in his site.

The game has me smiling throughout. Your character has this big exagerrated nose as if he's always being pulled forward by the smell of pie. He has the zombified gaze of a hungry man that only has one thing on his mind: delicious flaky crusted pastry. He is also a clumsy thief, which is the comedy of the game. Winterbottom manages to accidentally destroy half the city and rip a hole in the space-time continuum in his distracted zeel for burglaring piping hot baked goods.

The game plays rather similar to Braid. You can go back in time and use clones of yourself to your advantage in reaching pies in areas where you wouldn't be able to reach them on your own. The difference is that Braid used this mechanic to say something about wanting to erase our mistakes and do things differently. In P.B. Winterbottom, the mechanic is about going to any length to satiate our greedy desires. Like Braid though, the puzzles start out simple and get increasingly complicated.

If you like puzzle adventures and you're willing to devote a fiver for this game, it will be well worth your while.

I actually forgot that this came out! I'll have to download the demo.

Also, would it be weird of me to note that I really enjoyed the way that this post was written? Bravo J T! :D
