I'm actually pretty open minded about music, but it just seems much easier to find good metal than it is to find good music from other genres. I think part of the problem is that I can't find and really good websites devoted to non-mainstream quality music from other genres, whereas I can think of about three or four websites that are devoted to quality, non-mainstream metal.

Oh and Mozgus, upon subsequent listening, I do think this Nightwish album is a little lacking compared to some of their previous efforts. My initial reaction was strong, but upon a second and third listen listen I do kind of get what you're saying. There's still some great songs on there that I really like though and I'm not dissapointed with the album. However, I do indeed sense a simpler approach to the composition of some songs compared to what they've done before.

And while I DO like the new singer, I also believe she is part of the problem as I think Tarja could handle much more vocally and maybe that is why the composition of this new album seems a bit simplified. It's worth mentioning too that this is the first album where that back up vocalist actually gets to sing lead vocals in some songs

Maybe a bit hasty in firing Tarja, and they were so harsh and immature about it too.

Lately I've been big on ChthoniC, Carcass, Beethoven, and Gustav Holst. Carcass just never gets old, and Chthonic attracted me due to its original use of erhu and the fact they're a black metal band that's actually good. Beethoven because I'm learning piano, and Holst because his Planets Suite is just amazing.

I also agree with Gamerforlife that it's much easier to find good metal than good music in any other genre. Even a sub-par metal band generally puts out quality music compared to any other genre. As for Nightwish, well, never been a fan. Blind Guardian is my favourite power metal. But, seriously, if any of you like metal you need to check out Chthonic. Melodic, symphonic black metal that isn't abrasive like Darkthrone and company, but neither is it overly slick and orchestrated like Dimmu Borgir. It's a perfect mixture of black metal brutality and death metal production, with some great twists of creativity and song-writing.

Sample of one of my favourite songs from them, even though it's only a one minute track. Great erhu playing, and it's just a damn good song all around.

I must check those ChthoniC peeps out, CarcasS are classic, Symphonies Of Sickness is just utterly digusting :p

Yeh I aint exactly too big on Nightwish myself to be honest, of power metal ManowaR would have to be my favourite (Im not being 'ironic' -although I will admit their lyrics can be emm... amusing, but musically I dont think they can be faulted). I saw Blind Guardian about a year ago actually, very good concert, more like some weird kinda storytelling theatre performance, with the band doing big story intros like going 'and now we go BACK TO THE GREAT HALL!!!' the crowd knew every single lyric and it was a big singalong, especially during Nightfall eheh.

At the moment Im listening to - ImmortaL - Sons Of Northern Darkness, Bruce Springsteen - Magic, and lots of old hardcore rave and acid house

Do you guys that listen to wilco listen to Ryan Adams?

I've listened to a couple of artists mentioned on here including rjd2 (love since we last spoke) and at the drive in/ mars volta, I actually have some rare mars volta stuff including the live ep and the deloused story book.

Lately though:

Band of Horse
Ryan Adams (always)
Mount Eerie (always kinda local used to be "the Microphones")
Neil Young (old stuff)
Avett Bros
Magnolia Electric Co
