2K Games has announced that it will revive the classic X-COM franchise with a first-person shooter from the Bioshock 2 team titled simply XCOM.

I am now taking signups for the "head to 2K games and assassinate all the devs to keep them from completely fucking up an awesome franchise" trip.

I haven't even played X-COM and I know this is a bad idea. 2K Games is just trying to cash in on the success of Fallout 3. "Hey kids! We have a classic PC Gaming franchise coming back as an FPS, too!"

Can't they just milk Serious Sam or something?

Whoa, weird, I was just typing the exact same thing before I saw that you did first.
Anyway, who's idea was this, tro turn what was one of the greatest RTSs of all time into an FPS? The industry needs another FPS like a hole in the head [a headshot, I guess].

I've never played any of the XCom games, but I'll just say don't knock it till you try it.
Even though 2K Marin helped with Bioshock 1, they stayed very, very true to it with Bioshock 2. They might even take a long time to make sure it'll feel like the XCom you all used to play.

Except the Xcom I use to play was a turn based strategy affair. There is no good way to make an FPS feel like that.

After talking about this at length with a friend of mine there are only two ways I think this could work:
1. Tactical FPS ala Rainbow Six/Rainbow Six Rogue Spear.
2. Hybrid RTS/FPS. Where all planning is done via a RTS system and the actual missions are carried out as an FPS.
Dont get me wrong, neither are good ways to do justice to the series. But they could work.
