PSP Slim battery draining when turned off.

Post by winds »

Hey guys,
I noticed that my psp slim drains the battery even when completely shut off. I noticed it when I fully charged the battery some months ago, then didn't touch it until about a week ago and the battery was completely dead. I recharged it again and a day later the battery had drained a little bit over night. It isn't draining it a lot, but I was wondering if anyone else has this problem or knows a solution? Is there some setting that causes the psp to use some feature even when not on?
Also, as I know someone will suggest it, my psp was completely off and not in sleep mode.
Cheers!

That's probably completely normal.

This is just speculation, but I think the PSP's internal memory requires power, even when it's turned off. If you take a PSP, remove the battery, and turn it on a couple of days later, you're going to have to reset date/time settings. That's what I think the power is being used for.

Oh I think you're right. I forgot about the time and date on the psp. In fact when I turned it on after the battery completely died, it asked for the date and time again.
Thanks for that!

It's how all rechargeable batteries work. They basically loose their charge in a trickle fashion when not in use and doubly so if you simply flicked your PSP's power switch into standby mode instead of holding it up for full power off. It does prevent the battery from loosing most of it's charge capacity when in storage over time which is nice albeit double edged tactic.

Back in 2006 when I had my original DS and there still wasn't a big selction of games for it I flipped it closed and into standby mode leaving it in a drawer for six months, only to open it back up later on and continue playing Sonic Rush right where I left off for several more hours before recharging. Good old Ninty battery design.....

That must have been with a full charge, because it has happened to me that I get home with the DS lite in standby mode, forgotten to resume playing to a save point, and the next day the thing is off. I guess it could be that when that happened it was almost going to the "red" indicator of low battery, but 6 months seems too much considering this?

It's possible that your battery is on the way out. I just turned my PSP on this morning after not playing it for about 2 weeks. It was about 92% charged. I do have the extended life battery.

Well at the time my Original DS was less than a year and a half old and the Original DS was much better designed in terms of battery preservation when compared to the DS Lite.

Also, from the sound of it your DS Lite's battery is just either dying, or somehow your DS is still active and heavily draining the battery even in standby mode.

Gameboy Advance same thing, seems to hold a charge when not in use for a while. maybe true, new portables have more environmental stringent and less durable batteries?

EDIT
As for my digital camera I tossed out those stupid rechargeables. Rechargeable batteries always dead after sitting for a few weeks, good old alkalines always ready and last longer before dying too.

I was doing some research recently on batteries. It seems that there are certain batteries that won't have this effect (e.g, Sanyo Eneloop batteries). There are some people who also advocate for these special chargers (~$80+, such as Ansmann) that will optimally charge the batteries to make them perform even better.

Does anyone have experience with Eneloop (or similar batteries) and a premium charger?

Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it because I can buy a 50 pack of AA batteries from Costco for something like $14.

Okay found my older reply from a previous thread:

Keep in mind the basic principal how a battery works. It is a transfer of electrons from cathode plate to anode plate. As the corrosion process on the plates progresses, over time the battery has less internal active surface area of Cathode to Anode. Over a period of time you run into diminishing returns on run time and drain-recharge cycles.

There are other considerations in addition to cost of rechargeable batteries.
The higher the MAH rating, say a 2700 battery, the longer the run time but less cycles of recharges before battery wears out. A lower 2200 MAH rated battery will have less run time but more drain-recharge cycles can be accomplished.
Blade Runner Movie wrote: "The light that burns twice as bright lasts half as long".
So box of alkalines vs tray of rechargebles at 750 recharges before dying? You do save money upfront by going rechargeable but for the longest one time cycle, an alkaline will have the longest run time. Cost may be more for rechargeables when you factor in the wall current "charges".
