I agree with this. Nothing 'nonsensical' about it. But why is Geoho the only one doing this? One would have expected more hackers on the case. I guess everyone has a price after all!NeoTechni wrote:Howso? Just cause you failed to understand it didn't make it nonsensicalAppleQueso wrote: I'm sorry but your logic is beyond nonsensical.
The rootkit pushed DRM back significantly. Sony pushed too far, consumers pushed back.
This act did the same. Because of this, GeoHot will advance PS3 hacking more than its got since PS3 came out.

I've had this in the back of my mind, and I think the best way I can describe it is:
Imagine you're doing playing some games. While you're playing, you have the radio turned on. You're not really paying attention, but it's kind of nice having it in the background. Suddenly, you're friend comes in and just turns it off. Your friend complains that he hates the song. You get frustrated, not because you liked the song playing, but because your friend was rude.
I never used the OtherOS feature, but it's total bullshit that Sony can't patch it. If they want to cut shit out, why not just cripple the OtherOS even more? Cut out Blu-Ray drive support. Problem Solved?

He's not, I'm very confident that there are hundreds of hackers that are working behind the scenes. The cat and mouse game of hacking a well known closed platform means that devs aren't going to release their exploits until they're useable for everyone, if they document it too early then it's very easy for the hardware vendor to patch the hole then they've lost a potential point of entry for good. The same thing has happened with the iPhone the latest 3.1.3 update is currently considered un-jailbreakable, it isn't, it's still just as hackable as the previous firmware, however they won't waste a potential exploit on such a minor firmware revision that is mostly security fixes (to close these exploits) they'll wait until 4.0 firmware comes out and hopefully use it to gain access.Pulsar_t wrote:I agree with this. http://jaicrab.blogspot.com/ have released the LV0,LV1 and LV2 dumps which they documented how they got them on their website, it's in Spanish though so you'll have to translate.
http://xorloser.com/ has the ps3 exploit toolkit.
Currently geohot has figured out a way of editing a pup file that keeps install other os and the default system options in the XMB. Which is exactly what I said that Sony had done. It's the laziest way of removing a feature. They've edited an xml file and that's it. It would be like you removing the shortcuts from your start menu on windows and then saying you've removed the program. The files are still there, just the shortcut removed. Geohot shows that the bootloader and everything is here, he's just put the links back into the system settings menu.

Here's the video of said triumph, if anyone wants to see it:
Re: Sony removing OtherOS feature in 3.21 PS3 update
I was at Wally-Mart the other day. A Fat PS3 display is running demos EVERY DAY ALL DAY long without ever a glitch. Demo PS3 is running happily cooking inside that enclosed glass display case, yet all the YLODs on consumer models.
Is there more quality control on Kiosks, or maybe because no updates to crippling a console at a later date?

90% of all store kiosks are 60GB's (lots of these kiosks have been retrofitted to seem as if they're slim's but are actually still 60GB's on the inside) or if they're later purchased kiosks they really are slim 120GB's. Thanks to the constrictive and airflow killing design of the kiosk case they die about every one to three months like clockwork. If anything the retail demos for PS3'sare less reliableCRTGAMER wrote:I was at Wally-Mart the other day. A Fat PS3 display is running demos EVERY DAY ALL DAY long without ever a glitch. Stands to reason due to constant running. The one I saw in plain view is a fat, need to go back and count those USB ports. Just can't get over that this fat has been running every day all day long. It does have some life span, surely would have been replaced by a Slim if it ever did crap out. But still humming merrily along. Though it has a lot of milage on the Hard Drive, the Blu-Ray drive isn't being utilized. I am gonna have to get in good with the TV department sales associate. Maybe a chance once open display reset comes in, I would buy it and change the hard drive.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:90% of all store kiosks are 60GB's (lots of these kiosks have been retrofitted to seem as if they're slim's but are actually still 60GB's on the inside) or if they're later purchased kiosks they really are slim 120GB's. As an added thought to my last reply on kiosk, just wondering when did OSHA stop allowing Leaded solder in the factories? My line of reasoning is a chance maybe the earlier PS3s may have the good old fashioned reliable leaded solder.

So are they using a PS3 to hack the PS3 update?
Though humorous, that is a serious question.
