You say you don't want "shitty writing" as an answer, but that's really the only one. Lucas did the prequel trilogy because he had milked the original for all it was worth, and decided more Star Wars was needed to increase the amount of merchandise he could sell, continuity be damned.

I still like the theory that Chewbacca and R2-D2 were agents of the rebellion the whole time, justifying Chewie's presence in EP III, and meaning R2's memory was never deleted. After all, who (aside from the Empire) would delete a detailed record of the Fall of the Republic, and a firsthand account of how Vader and the Empire came to be?

I'm on 2 web forums, and thank the force I'm not on a star wars fanboy forum, but I'd imagine the majority would agree that Yoda punked out. I like your line of reasoning better.

Well, I don't have many doubts that you are correct, but there always seems to be one SW guy who has an answer for everything wrong with the prequels.

I like to think of it as that he always intended to make the prequel trilogy (he started with ep IV) and when he got around to it he didn't let continuity get in the way of the story he wanted to tell in the first three.

I wasn't aware that Chewie's presence in EP III needed to be justified. As for R2, as far as I recall it was only C-3PO who got the memory wipe (but it has been a while since I've seen Ep III). I don't believe R2 is ever witness to Anakin being named Darth Vader, so there's no continuity error there. As for a detailed fall of the Republic, once again R2 sees the Clone Wars but not the actual fall; he's with Padme the whole time (again, if memory serves).

I like to think that there's Star Wars, Empire and Jedi. Everything else is just fan-fiction.

Prequels? That shit didn't happen.

Was I the only one that thought he was talking about Han Solo? Even though I like what enderfall said, that he was referring to Vader/Anakin.

I always thought that Yoda was referring to there being "another hope", that Vader could still turn on the emperor and still fulfill the prophecy that he would destroy the Sith and bring balance to the force.

I mean he didn't say, "No, there is another Skywalker kid."

EDIT: found some more information on the subject at http://blogs.starwars.com/ghent/21

Prequels? What prequels? There is only a trilogy of Star Wars films.
