Any specific eBay strategies?

Any specific eBay strategies?

Post by Mozgus »

I feel so stupid for having not used this function until now. I was in the market for a good CRT to replace my LCD. I'm tired of the 8ms motion blur messing up my aim in shooters. I searched ebay for items within 20 miles, because I knew a CRT would be large and heavy. I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkVision-C19 ... dZViewItem

I drove 4 miles and picked it up today. It rocked. Manufactured Jan of 2005. It's quite fresh. I can run 1600x1200@75hz. Picture quality is as good as I've seen any mid range CRT put out. Blacks could be a little blacker I suppose. Can't complain for $30. Obviously the deal would not be worth it if that shipping cost was involved.

So what strategies have you guys used?

I used to rely on the Distance calculator back when Ebay was little known and you could get bargains. This was especially nice for pinball machines. Now, of course, because Ebay is a recognized international market, prices have sky-rocketed and I have less use for this function.

But I still use it for a lot of purchases.

I use a couple tools -- AuctionSieve and JBidWatcher. The former scans auctions for you -- you can create categories of listings, create some advance filters, and find -- on a regular basis -- the crap you want. JBidWatcher is simply a sniping program. Both are Java based programs, and as to be expected, run well on BSD, Linux, Winders, Mac, etc.

With games, I tend to look for the cheapest copy, disc only. I figure, at this point, I can print up my own case in slim-line. While having the manual is nice, I never use it -- and standard DVD cases are just too big, anyway. Its also a good way to get some of the latest but less popular titles on the cheap. Managed to snag Excite Truck and Trauma Center for 10 bucks and 8 bucks respectively, complete in great condition.

More often than not, however, I tend to rely on craigslist.
