Microsoft has shown us that you can spend an eternity patching security flaws. Easier to cut it off at the source.
Also, I'm not sure if they CAN remove the PS2 BC (at least on 60 GB ones). I'd have to know more about the architecture of the SystemOS.
Window's has many security flaws you going to expect Microsoft to simply cut out Windows ?
Regardless of whether something is hard or not makes no difference consumers have bought their product based on what the features are.
If even one of those features somehow stops working the consumer is not getting what they paid for.
If you bought a Bluray player that advertised as playing both Bluray and DVD's but through an update the DVD feature got cut everyone would soon be complaining and asking for refunds but just because Sony is being lazy and not patching the security flaw its completely okay.
I seriously don't get why people are supporting Sony in this they are big companies just out their to make money for themselves you should look after your own rights coz they damn sure will look after their own.

As long as it maintains the features I paid for I don't have any beef with them.
That is the bottom line people are not getting the features they paid for regardless of what you bought it for. You are also not getting what you paid for

If I want to play game X I need to meet the minimum OS and DirectX requirements. And when I installed Windows XP to replace Windows 98 I lost the ability to play Mechwarrior 2. Oh no! I'm being held hostage by Microsoft!
Not a very good analogy really everyone accepts that Windows XP is a different operating system compared to Windows 98 so casualties are accepted.
I don't recall Windows XP or Windows 98 losing it's features throughout their support cycles.
Its really like comparing apples to Oranges because Windows is the operating system and not the hardware.
With a PC Microsoft does not control both the software and hardware it only controls the software.
The only time it does kind of work is when Microsoft introduced WGA and stopped people having access to updates to new software such as internet explorer 7 and 8.
However this only applied to pirates who didn't pass the WGA test not those who legitimately purchased their software.
The rest still had access to the existing OS features and new ones with updates.
