I don't use the Other OS feature on my launch model PS3 but I like having the option. Hearing this news just pisses me off. It's one thing for Sony to continuously remove feature after feature with each new model of the PS3 but now they are taking features away from the old models. What's next, taking out backwards compatibility?

I will hold off on downgrading my system for as long as possible. Sony has been on my boycott list for many years (I buy my Sony products used) and from the looks of things, they will stay on it for years to come. Fuck you, Sony. Fuck yourself with a PSPGo.

For a brief while, I had hope for Sony. I had hope that they could increase the functionality of the PS3 via updates, to include features like an actually functional Remote Play, more codec support, and making PSN easier to use. I just lost that hope. I'm getting my PS3 hacked as soon as I can. GeoHot, the guy who hacked the PS3, said he will fight back against this, and release a Custom Firmware. I'm siding with him now, just to spite Sony. Hackers unite! I will not update and submit to Sony's demands; I'll fight back, too! Sony is now officially my enemy.

If you hacked into a bank machine and stole all the money, then the bank changed the function of the machine so that you could no longer steal the money, would you be upset?

I know that sounds like one of those terrible anti-piracy ads before movies. But it's insane that people are complaining about this when they know full well why Sony is removing this function.

I'm not trying to be preachy against piracy, 'cause I've pirated all sorts of stuff. But I'm not gonna cry about a company doing it's best to keep people from stealing from them.

Edit: I'm also aware that the Other OS option is not currently being used for piracy. But if a hack became available to pirate games, which is a very likely possibility, then a lot of people would use it for that. It's a cautionary measure.

That's not the same thing. In your example the bank machine still works. They've essentially, patched the vulnerability. What is happening with the PS3 is like the bank removing the ability to draw money out of it completely, because it could be exploited. That's the problem.

What happens if somebody finds an exploit in the PS2 BC? Just like the PS2 had with the Liberty hack with the PS1 BC. Sony are just going to remove the BC feature from the PS3. It doesn't matter what feature they remove or how little it is used. They are removing features you have paid for. That should not happen, no matter how you look at it, or wrap under EULA, just because they can, doesn't mean it's right.

Does anyone take EULAs seriously? I remember reading a few times that they don't hold up in Court.

I've never installed Linux on my PS3 before, but this still sounds pretty anal. Hacking next-gen consoles/computers/anything is one of those things I try not to fuck around with.
Systems: SNES, PS1, GBA SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, Wii, PS3 (Fully Backwards Compatible), Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, a Sega CD, and a Sega Saturn.

I'm still convinced it's an april fools joke.

And if it's not, I don't understand why everyones angry. People on this forum are the ONLY people i've ever seen use the otherOS feature on the ps3. Everyone just uses the ps3 to play some ballin gaymes. Thats it. Thats what I want it for. Ballin gaymes and ballin gaymes only. I'm pretty sure thats why they made the console, so people can play ps3 games on it. If the point of making a ps3 was to emulate stuff, then boy have I been mistaken.

(Not trying to be mean to those who are angry)

Have you forgotten that for about 3 years the PS3 was the lowest costing Blu-Ray player?

Niode, you are awesome. Like you, I am amazed that anyone can even begin to argue about this. It doesn't matter if someone uses the Other OS feature or not. It's simply wrong for Sony to remove features like this. Sony does so many horrible things to fuck over their paying customers, and they get away with it. Why? Because they know damn well their customers are idiots who will continue to give them money no matter how hard they get raped.

If only people would stop being selfish and stand up against Sony's bullshit, this shit wouldn't keep happening.

I think people have stated several times why they are upset about it. Because it is a feature that they paid for and now will not have access to. That is like Sony stealing from them.
