Linux is gimped on it bad enough that it's largely useless, unless you're just crunching numbers. Based on principle I can understand being upset though. Sony has pulled an amazing amount of shit with the PS3, I'm surprised more people don't call them on it.
That's the double edged sword as a consumer. Linux is for all intents and purposes useless on the PS3. I did some research probably 12-18 months ago to see what I could do with Linux on the PS3, but found there to be no features worth using. So while I'm upset that they are taking away a feature that I paid for as an early adopter (bought my PS3 in Dec 2006), I can't find how this will ultimately affect me, or 99% of all other PS3 users.

A feature paid for, being removed that was originally part of initial package. Same analogy if you bought say the GM Auto with On-Star features and then thru update, certain services were taken out because few people used them. If you don't update then you get no service. Even though most owners will never use it, there is no reason to take Linux capability out.

Just like the original Gray PSX 9000s removing the Parallel port to dismay of Action Replay cartridge owners. Only this is worse, it affects existing owners. Reminds me of Amazon Kindle mess pulling George Orwell 1984.

More fuel for the fire.

My first 60gb died during Firmware Update. Yes probably it was heat or drive went bad, but too coincidental YLOD occurred during that update. Maybe should wait a few days until servers open up for this next chop-up-features update.

The thing is CRT, if they remove a feature due to a SKU revision such as the SCPH900x PSXs, you aren't forced to upgrade to the new PSX, it's a SKU revision after all, the physical hardware has changed. Hence why I'm not up in arms that they removed the Linux support in the slim. You accept that what you are getting, feature-wise, is what you paid for. Sony removing features after I paid for them is just not on. That isn't fair. That would be like my ISP downgrading my performance from 8mbps to 1mbps because a minority is using this added bandwidth to make piracy easier. I can totally agree with them not guaranteeing the maximum possible speed, but if I am completely capable of receiving it (and have done for 8 months) and they purposefully cut it for the sake of piracy I would have consumer rights on my side, and rightfully sue their ass to kingdom come for charging me for a service I simply wasn't getting because of a fault at their end.

How Sony can blackmail me (and a lot of people, it doesn't matter if you use the Linux feature or not, they're still removing that possibility from you) into upgrading, and get away with it is just completely baffling, do we not have rights as a consumer anymore? Can they just do whatever the fuck they want and we just have to like it or simply not use the hardware that we have paid good money (a hell of a lot more than the competitors mind!!) for? I fear that a lot of people just won't give a shit that their rights are being violated, how would they like it if they went to much expense to acquire a BC PS3, not only having the risk of it YLOD as these units are particularly prone to doing, and then Sony just flatly removing the backwards compatibility due to a security flaw (just like the PS2 Liberty exploit) because 'only a few people use this feature'. No, Sony, that is the final straw, I simply will not put up with your fucking shit anymore. If this issue does not get resolved (by reinstating the OtherOS feature in firmware 3.21+), that's it. No more games/movies will ever be purchased for this fucking piece of shit system of yours. Fuck you.

Look like Sony doesn't care too much about the customers but more of stopping the hacker to try to hack into the PS3 like they did for the PSP.

I was wondering if the Navy even installs system updates in the first place. Not like they officially will touch that 10 GB partition. The more interesting question is what happens if you update a PS3 that already has another OS installed.

I can't think of any reason for the Navy to update the PS3's, so I think they could care less.
