Need input on console coloring (Vinyl Dye)
Need input on console coloring (Vinyl Dye)
In the future, I would like to turn my US black PS2 white. And pink. Sakura pink. My big question is....
If I use vinyl dye, can I get it white (rather than grey)?
I want to avoid spraypainting, as I want to conserve the natural plastic feel of the console (rather than have it feel painted over.

Re: Need input on console coloring (Vinyl Dye)
If you use something like Plastikote, or in the US I think you have Krylon Fusion which amounts to the same thing. The console will still feel like a console, it won't feel like it's been painted if you do it correctly.
I paint my consoles in this order:
clean
Sand
Primer
First coat
Second coat
Sand
Clear coat
Wet sand to desired matt/gloss finish.

Krylon Fusion sucks for console and accessory mods. It's just spray paint that is better suited to painting small areas that aren't going to be touched a lot or screwed with often such as decorative shutters around windows, and vinyl siding for a house or shed. Within a few days it will start cracking and peeling from being touched and played by the user thanks to the heat generated by the PS2 and other factors.Niode wrote:I think you have Krylon Fusion which amounts to the same thing
Vinyl Dye on the other hand is a 100% permanent bond that is non-removable as it actually chemically seeps into the plastic and alters it's fundamental color. If you want it in white visit your local auto parts dealer such as Auto Zone, O'Riley, Advance Auto Parts and look for the spray paint cans marked as "For Vinyl" they're about $7 and easily obtainable in white at most places. I usually have the best selection of colors at Advance Auto Parts, but it's mostly a local thing so you'll have to look around.

Dam. I had a link to a guy that used white Plastikote Vinyl Dye on his Gamecube. Looked Amazing. Site is down though

Re: Need input on console coloring (Vinyl Dye)
Maybe it is different then... All the mods I've done have never suffered from this cracking issue. But I do proper job of it rather than what most people do and just mask off the bits they don't want painting and just spray it, then let it dry and put it back together. With a sand-prime-coat-coat-sand-clearcoat-wetsand process you get a much more proffesional and hard wearing finish,Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:Krylon Fusion sucks for console and accessory mods. The real question is: How does it hold up under actual use and everyday conditions?CRTGAMER wrote:This is so purty by zoki64, deserves another view.

I've used it a few times and for anything that's going to get a lot of use or daily play Krylon Fusion is a complete nightmare.Niode wrote:Maybe it is different then... If you're going to put it on a shelf and let it look pretty with minor use then Krylon might be OK, but if it's an everyman's mod which will see a lot of play and see moderate to heavy use then I strongly recommend Vinyl Dye. It's really amazing stuff when applied properly and cannot be told apart from if the plastic itself was molded in the color of dye it was sprayed in.

Wedding ring definitely has to come off to avoid scratches. zoki64 mentioned he used Automotive paint which has to take heat expansion/contraction of outdoor exposure.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The real question is: How does it hold up under actual use and everyday conditions?zoki64 wrote:Hi.

I imagine finish would crack first on the controller from a zealous gamer.
Plus the "Natural Plastic" effect that Devezu wanted is different.
Maybe try that Vinyl Dye on scrap plastic or inside of console first (Away from any High Temp area)?

Vinyl dye will soak into the plastic and look natural if applied correctly (Practice with some cheap spray paint to get experience if you're new to spray painting, or ask a friend with experience for help) and it won't have any risk of coming off at all.CRTGAMER wrote:Wedding ring definitely has to come off to avoid scratches. zoki64 mentioned he used Automotive paint which has to take heat expansion/contraction of outdoor exposure.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote:The real question is: How does it hold up under actual use and everyday conditions?zoki64 wrote:Hi.
