Re: Mods.. Are they overstated?
I loved playing mods for Wolfenstein 3D. One of the mods, Spear End of Destiny, was actually more fun than the original game.

More details, pleaseMrPopo wrote:Diablo 2 has a lot of nice mods that reinvigorated that game for me after I got bored with it.
I've been playing Divine Divinity which has a lot of similarities with D1 and D2 (it's mostly a Diablo clone, but it shares a lot of things with other games like Baldur's Gate as well)... The combat itself isn't as satisfying as D2 though, so I have been thinking of giving the glorious classic another spin (D2 is certainly one of my favorite games, and may even be #1 for me).

This place can do a better job than I can. There's a forum for each of the main mods, as well as a subforum for old mods not being worked on but are in a pretty good state (Nezeramontias comes to mind). It'll also help you with getting multiple versions of D2 on your system, as some mods require older patches of D2 for various reasons.

I think mods do add something to the PC experience, but you're probably right that they are overstated. I often install mods, play them once, then think I'll get back to them until I realize they're just taking up space on my hard drive and it's time to uninstall. Mods can be good, but you're often wading through a lot of crappy ones (usually with zombies in it) before you find anything worth playing.

My general rule of thumb is to avoid anything fan-made with zombies unless it achives real fame, like "They Hunger".J T wrote:I think mods do add something to the PC experience, but you're probably right that they are overstated. Re: Mods.. Are they overstated?
as I state in numerous threads on numerous forums, since.... I started modding with DooM (1, that is)
"I don't do Vanilla"
*vanilla* being "un-modified-game(s)"
whenever I buy a game for PC, I mainly do it to modify it
I've modded plenty and still do (Morrowind mainly these days)
hell, my GTA San Andreas and Morrowind GOTY for the Xbox1 are so modded that it's beyond incredible
I do realize the potential of the PS3, but the main reason I got an Xbxo 360, was due to the Xbox1's modding capabilities
it's a matter of time, before the 360 catches up
there's plenty of great, great, great mods out there, be the TC (Total Conversion) or just minor modifications of a game, it still adds heaps to replay value
I can't imagine many people would play Morrowind today, if it wasn't for the TESCS
I play DooM 1, Quake, Duke Nuke'm 3D etc. still today, with mods
(DooM series having gotten true 3D-models, same for Duke Nuke'm and the Quake1 engine is still thriving, now as opensource)
there's so much fun to be had, it's almost insane to be left out
Counter-Strike was fun, when the devs were still testing it (back in the days); and actually had a connection to the people playing it
nothing against CS, but it's far, far, far from the *only* mod out there; and it's even farther from the best
=)

Re: Mods.. Are they overstated?
There were also plenty of 'modded' games for the PS2 but I was never into them. I understand your passion for modding but it's still a niche thing. Regarding the 360 I wouldn't count on anything being modded. The games cannot be altered at all, and the major use of the free60 project is emulation but I don't expect it to emulate the PS2 or Dreamcast unless somehow truly dedicated people start porting emulator projects to Xenon. I would be really surprised if the 360 platform is ever fully compromised.Lord_Santa wrote:I do realize the potential of the PS3, but the main reason I got an Xbxo 360, was due to the Xbox1's modding capabilities

I use XBins on a regular basis; and even-though they may not have come as far as the Xbox1; there's still a handful of emulators, dashboards and other stuff to download from their FTPPulsar_t wrote:There were also plenty of 'modded' games for the PS2 but I was never into them. I realize that MS has taken measures in order to prevent any and all homebrew; but I'm hoping in due time that the community will be able of finding a solution
as for mods; it *is* possible to mod Fallout 3 on the 360; *mainly* due to the similarities in the games (between PC and 360)
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_mod_f ... n_xbox_360
that's a very crude and misleading answer; but I have seen it done on the mod-sites I visit
as for this specific instance, the person used a house-mod and some minor mods in order to test his theory
as of now, it's only Fallout 3; but if Oblivion gets modded on the 360 as well; then it's but a matter of time, before people get working on the "other" games (GoW, etc.)
here's to hoping
