Has Virtual Boy Modding ever been attempted?

Post by ReddMcKnight »

I know, the system was a commercial failure, but there must be at least a few people who took an interest in the late Gunpei Yokoi's "3D" Game System. Did anyone ever attempt to create modifications for the system? Specifically, adding a cable to it that allows it to be played on a TV, or develop Homebrew Games for it?

Because of the way the Virtual Boy works, you couldn't display it on a normal tv.

I dont know the technical side of it, but it has two displays (one per eye) and uses rapidly moving mirrors to create the illusion of 3D.

Hmmmm. Well, is there anyone who can actually play the thing? I understand it's somewhat possible to play it if you take a break every 15 Minutes, but I only heard that as a rumor.

I think some people have attempted mods such as changing the colour of the LEDs, but I don't have any examples on-hand

It really varies between people. I don't have any problems with it as long as I don't do marathon sessions, some people can't handle it for more than 10 minutes. I found it harder on my back and neck than my eyes, it can be tough to get it positioned in a comfortable way that doesn't require hunching over or slouching down.

I could play for about 30min to an hour. Depending when my neck started to hurt. My eyes didnt feel strained or anything.
