I think that having something from launch is something to be proud of... It shows you had faith in the product before it was a hit. It also shows that you are a serious gamer who invests their time and money in the latest and greatest. Some of my launch day success stories include:

I've only ever bought 4 gaming items at launch. Super Metroid, Diablo II collectors, Diablo II LOD, and Hellgate London collectors. Though then I sprung for lifetime on Hellgate London too and we all know how that turned out.
Usually I wait until things have been out and prices come down. It just works out so much better.
