Hidden Gems Panel help?

Post by fastbilly1 »

So I thought what the heck, might aswell get some input from people who know a lot more than I do on some of these. The situation is: in the near future myself, Pephary, and possibly others, are giving a panel at a convention about Hidden Gems of Gaming. This was requested by congers and I tossed a list back between Racket, Ack, and Pephary, for the past short while. The panel is focusing on as many major home consoles as we can from the NES to the Xbox. It is an hour and thirty minute panel and we are well aware we will not get through the list below but if you feel we should add in a console I will try to add them in (right now the only two I can think of that will be requested is TG16/PCE and the SMS). The purpose of the panel is to really give gamers who have “tried it all” a title they may have missed. And for those who frequent the site and will be at the convention, well pretend you don’t see this, OR read up and join us Saturday night.

We are also trying to keep it to one import and one domestic per console, but if there are short titles, we can do more than one. I have included youtube links for the titles that I can but will be making my own videos if I cannot get the ok from the person who uploaded the video.

Right now the Xbox has two domestic titles instead of a domestic and an import because I honestly do not know of a great import other than Alien Hominid. Any ideas? The only three non negotiable ones are Kaze no Regret, Battle Cross, and Team Buddies. And the biggest question of them all for yall is what do yall think the domestic Dreamcast Hidden Gem should be?

Enough from me, heres the list as of right now:

NES:
Import: Moon Crystal -
Import 2: Recca 92 -
Domestic: Base Wars -

Genesis/Megadrive:
Import: Uzu Keobukseon - Space Turtle Battleship – cant find footage
Domestic: General Chaos -

SNES:
Import: Battle Cross -
Domestic: Cybernator -

PSX:
Import: Rakugaki Showtime - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakugaki_Showtime
Domestic: Team Buddies -

N64:
Import: Sin and Punishment –
Domestic: Body Harvest -

Saturn:
Import: Bulk Slash -
Domestic: Three Dirty Dwarves -

Dreamcast:
Import: Real Sound: Kaze No Regret -
Domestic:

PS2:
Import: Hokuto No Ken -
Domestic: Mark of Kri -

Xbox:
Domestic: Samurai Shodown 5 -
Domestic: Panzer Dragoon Orta -

Gamecube:
Import: Kururin Squash! -
Domestic: Odama -

Right now the forerunners for the Dreamcast title are Cannon Spike and Typing of the Dead (and I am leaning toward Typing of the Dead).

First off, great list.

There are a few I might take issue with. Namely Base Wars and Mark of Kri. They are both good games, but there are more worthy hidden gems, imo, if I had to pick just one.

For the NES, there is:
Journey to Silius:
Unforgettable music. Great graphics for its time. Really fun run n gun gameplay.

Metal Storm:
There is an indie game called VVVVVV that is very popular right now because it has a gravity switching mechanic. However, Metal Storm did this first and did it better.

Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode:
Varied gameplay with action, maze, shmup, and rpg elements. It was very stylish in its day. Also, the only NES game I can think of with a sex scene.

Guardian Legend:
This game was cool the way it went between overhead spaceship shmup levels and walking around adventure levels.

S.C.A.T. Special Cybernetic Attack Team
:
Despite what the name suggests, this game is not a piece of poo. This is Contra if Contra could fly. It was a great game. Good graphics and excellent play control. It never got the attention it deserved.

Also, I think I prefer your choices for NES import, but just to point it out, Mr. Gimmick is pretty good:

For alternate PS2 choices,

R.A.D. Robot Alchemic Drive:
Horrible voice acting, but absolutely original and entertaining controls. L1 takes a step with the left leg. R1 takes a step with the right leg. Left analog moves left arm for attacks. Right analog moves right arm for attacks. Other buttons execute different weapon attacks. The game is brilliant in design.

The Red Star:
People recommend this game pretty frequently on Racketboy because it has a great arcade feel. It deserves the praise it gets for the way it combines the best of a beat em up and a shmup.

Peter Jackson's King Kong:
People overlook this because they assume that all licensed games are crappy. That's a shame because this is probably the best first person shooter on the PS2 though. The storyline is integrated into the gameplay, similar to how Half Life games tell their story. It's one of the rare examples where the story is perhaps better told in the videogame than it was in the movie.

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil:

The level design in this 2d platformer is about as good as it gets.

At first I was going to rage because with Sin and Punishment released on the Virtual Console it's become "too known," but then I realized that the availability and the soon to be released sequel make it an excellent pick.

Body Harvest is one of those total bargain bin hidden gems. Love that  .

I also think Red Star over Mark of Kri.

Good pick on Kuririn Squash. I can't think of a better Gamecube import.

Real Sound and ToD combo would really blow people away, so that has my vote.

Really? You can't find an import XBox Hidden Gem?

Metal Wolf Chaos

This one is an anomaly - an extremely US patriotic game, developed in Japan, and a Japan exclusive...

As for an Xbox import title, I've never really played it, but I thought Magatama looked pretty good:

Also never played it, but DriHoo (import) on the XBox looked pretty good - link .

Although let's be honest, the Xbox is a very overlooked system and there are a crapton of hidden gems on the thing. Having an import title really isn't necessary, and the two gems already selected are probably better than any of the system's few Japan exclusive games.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again; Binary Land for the Famicom is an awesome game. Golgo 13 is, too, but it has been gaining popularity lately. Also, Hook [Genesis, SNES, SCD... and NES] are very good games as well, but are often overlooked due to being peripherally associated with Robin Williams, and the fact that it's based off a movie. The Sega CD version is definitely the best, because of the vastly improved music, even over the SNES version.

Love Dreamcast TYPING DEAD Choice. Show a unique gameplay with the keyboard.
Dreamcast exclusive releases. How about TOY COMMANDER or FLOGIAN BROTHERS?

Import Dreamcast or Domestic PS2 - REZ (I think Dreamcast is better showoff with Mad Catz Red Light vibrator).

So many to choose.
Import PS1 - VIB RIBBON (can add own music CD, but the on disc tracks are so weird in a good way)
Import PS1 - NEVERHOOD KLAYMEN KLAYMEN (The adventure not platformer)
Import PS1 - TWINSEN LITTLE BIG ADVENTURE or LBA

Famicom Import:

Gun-Dec
or
Utsurun Desu Kawauso Hawaii E Iku

Genesis Domestic:

Alien Soldier
or
McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure

SNES Import:

Umihara Kawase

I gotta go put my kids to sleep so you'll have to google the imports yourself. Sorry - but I hope these help!
