And these guys DO know gaming. Maybe someone else here who reads their reviews will back me up on that ...
I defo back you up on this. Trust me just read an issue or two and you will see that Edge knows gaming very well and is leagues ahead compared to other gaming mags.
EDGE beats out most of the stuff here in the US.
If you spend any time browsing magazines in the a Barnes & Noble, you'll quickly see that the gaming mags in the UK blow away their US counterparts in both writing, topics, and design. US Gaming mags really suck.

I get some free subscriptions to a few US mags and only spend about 3 minutes browsing through because I never find anything worth reading or even looking at. The ads are sometimes the most interesting things (and there are always plenty of those).

I have'nt read any US mags in years. Used to be able to get EGM before and I use to remember that it was really thick (in terms of size) compared to UK mags. It seemed crammed full of gaming goodness and back then I used to be starved and hungry for anything gaming related.

Anyway, I dunno if UK mags are better but nearly all of them seem to be written by "fanboys" with constant childlike console bashing. Well thats what it used to be like. Dont buy any mags now except Edge.

Also was'nt there a Edge like mag in USA?

I don't know about Edge-like, but there were some interesting mags that had some character like Game Fan and Gamer's Republic. A lot of people like Next-Gen too.

Those all passed away a while ago...

I think I remember Gamefan. I loved how they they would devote lots of coverage to games that other magazines would barely even mention. I remember one issue praising Virtual On, Bangaio and they had a huge feature for Sword of the Berserker on the Dreamcast. I think it was even on the cover. I remember one issue with a glowing two page review on Tecmo's Deception 2 or 3. None of the other mags like GamePro or EGM even seemed to care about those games at the time.

There was a thread going on at NeoGAF about Play magazine, and the original poster asked how it could be relevant when the reviews are such a joke (which they are). The reason most people gave is the same thing you just said about Game Fan (which I also loved and subscribed to back in the day).

Not coincidentally, Play is own and run by Dave Halverson, who used to run Game Fan. I still have some issues of Game Fan in the closet at my parents' house! They're from about 95 to 97.
