Anyone use a system like that? Mozy or something similar?
I've been thinking of making the plunge and backingup a shit ton of comics that i've worked on.
Good/Bad stories?
Cloud computing to backup files? anyone?
Re: Cloud computing to backup files? anyone?
I posted some days or weeks ago about Gladinet. It has a free version with some limited features but it had worked so far.
http://www.gladinet.com/
It allows you to mount existing services (including free ones like Skydrive from MS, or Google Docs from Google) as virtual drives, so you only have to drag and drop instead of fiddling with the annoying websites that more or less have you "browsing" for each file, adding up to some 5 or so, then click upload and wait.
I heartily recommend you try it before trying some paid service. I managed to backup a bunch of stuff to one of my Microsoft Live accounts created for the purpose (through Skydrive they give you 25 GB, with the limit that no single file can be bigger than 50 MB. It works to backup most of the stuff you would want to backup).
I have to say lately I don't know what is up with it, but I try to upload a file to the storage and it starts uploading, gets to 100% and then gives an error and the file doesn't go into the cloud. But this may be a problem with what I'm doing or something, and I certainly managed to "drag and drop" a bunch of GBs through it as they are still there!
Even if it works for a few days for you as well I think it may be worth it. And as I don't know what is currently wrong on my machine, maybe it will continue working for you.

That is kind of a dealbreaker for me. I'm uploading highrez artwork with multiple layers so the files can get kind of big. I need a service that provides no caps on file size.Ivo wrote:through Skydrive they give you 25 GB, with the limit that no single file can be bigger than 50 MB. I couldn't find if Gladinet has that or not on their site. Maybe i'll try the free one, and if i like it upgrade.

I've been using the Mozy Home (free - 2GB) and it works fine.
I do need to test out the restore part though.

that kicks me out. I'm on OSX. Looks like i might be leaning to mozy after all.Gladinet wrote:System Requirements: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2003
You ever have a problem with mozy gtmtnbiker ?
Re: Cloud computing to backup files? anyone?
Yes, Gladinet is Windows only.
The free version just mounts other storages as drives, it doesn't impose the rules. For example, mounting Google Docs you can have files of up to 250 MB (although they don't give as much total space per account as Skydrive, but you could just create more accounts).

If you wanted to fork over the cash there is always MobileMe
Older. Not wiser.

I haven't tried it yet, and it's Windows only (srry op), but the other day I found this utility that lets you use your Gmail account's 6000 Meg storage space as a virtual harddrive.

Under this sort of thing, there is also GSpace which is a very convenient plug-in for Firefox with an interface that reminded me a bit of FTPs and that uploads your stuff into chunked e-mails.Anapan wrote:I haven't tried it yet, and it's Windows only (srry op), but the other day I found this utility that lets you use your Gmail account's 6000 Meg storage space as a virtual harddrive.

But a virtual drive that you can actual drag and drop is better, and Gladinet with Google Docs only provides 1 GB (IIRC that's the capacity of Google Docs). I don't know how Microsoft was so generous with 25 GBs on Skydrive.

No, I haven't had any issues. It seem to do its job pretty unobtrusively. I do get a popup every day stating that the files have been backed up.nickfil wrote:that kicks me out. I'm on OSX. I've friends who use Carbonite and are pleased with that product as well. Mozy seems to give you the most for the free edition.
